What causes Clicking or Popping in Throat when Swallowing?
I was doing some neck massages a few days ago and then afterwards whenever I swallow, I feel a clicking/popping sensation and sound when my larynx moves up upon swallow. There is no pain at the moment but the popping sensation in my throat gives me anxiety whenever I swallow. Is this the result of the cartilage rubbing on each other? Is it from the hyoid bone rubbing the thyroid cartilage? Are there exercises that can fix this?

Hello.
Sorry I know this is. Avery old post. But can you tell me if the clicking sound was resolved by fixing the hole in your eardrum? Did the doctor say this was the cause?
Hello I am too facing same problem I didn't had it earlier I don't get any pain too it's just clicking whenever I swallow, is there any remedy or medications that I can follow to get relief from this
Welcome @sabakhan, I posted a video earlier in the discussion on something you can try that might help. Here's the link - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/323788/.
I think you will get your best answer and probably ease your mind if you have it checked out by an ENT doctor.
How long has the clicking when swallowing been going on?
Sure I will watch it thank you so much sir ☺️ this problem wasn't before probably from one week sir also my body is very sensitive to cold since childhood but still I am very addicted to cold stuffs during winter season only can this be a reason of it ?
I had my thyroid removed years ago. I also have a very dry mouth due to medications. I have been wondering shy sometimes when I swallow, I can here a clunking sound in my throat. I can feel it as well. If I push the voicebox area from side to side, it will also clunk sometimes. Any ideas on this?
One must truly be a critical thinker when considering all the misinformation out there. Throughout this entire thread, your comment has offered the most useful information for direction. Considering anatomy and physiology, it would be fair to assume the injury to be soft tissue/ligament damage. With that, there are only two solutions: For a grade 3 ligament tear/rupture, surgery is required. For grades 1 and 2, being minor to moderate (most cases), simply time is required. Ligaments will heal on their own over several months. To aid the healing process, a healthy diet is always a plus, to include hydration. Light stretching and gentle massaging will help maintain flexibility of ligaments, keeping the posterior muscles and ligaments in line as well (neck and back); they function cooperatively. Last, keep in mind that the clicking is nothing to fret about; don’t stress over it. In time, it will subside and eventually, cease.

Did this ever improve for you? I’m going through the exact same thing right now.
Yes, it did! Turns out it was acid reflux, I had an endoscopy at my ENT appointment and this was the finding. It stopped after a couple of weeks and hasn’t happened since.
I have a history of esophagitis and reflux, in addition to an esophageal motility disorder. But I’ve never quite felt it this way, almost with mucous buildup and the popping and clicking when swallowing is new to me. Like something in my throat is dislodged or broken. I can’t find any info about that being related to reflux. But maybe I need to give it time and some patience, follow the reflux regimen, and see if it heals. I really appreciate it. Thank you!
