GERD issues

Posted by janarose @janarose, Feb 29, 2012

I am 22 years old. I don't smoke or drink. Growing up I can remember having a slight hoarse voice in the morning if I ate to late at nights. But never anything too miserable. It would go away within a hour after drinking water.
March 2011 on a Wednesday. I woke up with a hoarse voice that never went away. After a few weeks I started to get slightly worried so I went to my family doctor. I went 3 times over a course of 5-6 weeks and they had no idea after giving me multiple steroids and antibiotics that did nothing. I also had no pain in the beginning my throat didn't hurt at all. My only symptom was the voice. So they sent me to a throat specialist. (Audiologist) He did a throat endoscopy and told me I have GERD. He prescribed me omeprazole 20mg once a day. I changed my diet. I stopped eating hours before I went to sleep. I have never been a soda drinker, I am not a fan of fatty foods. The fattiest thing I like to eat sometimes is chocolate.. So I gave that up. I don't eat big meals. I have always been a snacker. But I didn't seem to get that much better so back as planned in 6weeks. He told me to start taking it twice a day. my throat started to hurt and become really sore around this point. I would wake up in severe pain, and it would hurt through out the day. I would take 2- 20mg omeprazole and I would also drink baking soda mixed with water whenever I couldn't handle the constant burn anymore.. I wouldn't drink the baking soda/water at the same time as taking the omeprazole. I made sure I did that hours apart from one another.
So about 10-12 weeks later my symptoms got much worse. It wasn't working. Nothing seemed to work.
So I went back to the doctor. They did another endoscopy and my throat is more swollen than the first. It's starting to swell up even higher around where my thyroid is.
I started having chest pains and it has become hard to swallow anything.
My heart rate gets insanely high in random occasions.
I feel a knock/thump whenever I swallow.
My throat is always hurting.
I am nauseous when I eat.
It's painful to eat or drink anything; I have lost almost 30lbs because of it.

So I have had a endoscopy twice now,
I got a barium swallow done and he told me I have acid reflux. probe test done,.,Blood work....How many more test need to be done?
I haven’t heard my voice in a year now. It's to the point where I am becoming depressed and I ignore talking to people. I ignore hanging out with friends, because if I talk to much my throat becomes incredibly sore to the point where I won't be able to sleep. I can't yell or whisper. I have one tone. If I yell then I’m pretty much out for the rest of the day because my throat hurts so badly.
I am thinking about going to the Mayo Clinic. Has anyone else been through this? Do you think they will be able to help? Could it be something else?
Im desperate.

I feel for you. I’ve been on every PPI. Nothing. Been hospitalized 3 times this year from internal bleeding. 5 transfusions all together. Every local test they have, has been performed. Nothing.

Prilosec was working in combination with my latest PPI before my recent hospitalization. They took me off it and the Protonix and now back on Omeprazole.

Have they checked your gastrin levels to rule out Zollinger Ellison?

Hi cmackia2020. In the later part of November I became constipated--no movement for 5 days. This was very unusual for me. I took stool softners and Miralax until the BM's started. They were black and bloody. It was at the start of the Thanksgiving 4-day holiday and not doctor or primeds were open till the following Monday. I went right away and they sent me directly to an emergency room. Bad luck continued. No GI doctor comes to that ER nor were there any beds available. I was there for 25 hrs and they found a hospital and a GI doctor an hour and a half away. When I did get a EGD and colonoscopy 4 days later there were no sites identified for the bleeding. They did say I have a sliding hernia. I was not familiar with that but upon reading about it, it says it can call hemorrhage. Now I'm anemic. I've been taking Pantoprazole Sod DR 40 mg daily since 2019. Reading your post makes me wonder if bleeding is something that may happen again. No further tests have been scheduled. My regular GI Doc said she was getting the records from the hospital and would go from there but no work from her. Guess I'll need to contact the office to see what can be done now.
Thanks and pray your situation gets better. Faye

Gargling with 8.8 ph alkaline water can help the throat. It neutralizes pepsin, the enzyme that digests protein and can also eat away at your throat. Don’t eat anything 4 hours before bedtime. Working with your physician to make sure your biome is in good shape could be helpful.

Gosh, my GI doc is on vacation, I'll check in for the formal answer. Just asking if other have these symptoms and if so, any suggestions?

Supposedly had silent reflux, (never felt any reflux OF NOTE,until 4 weeks ago after endoflip)... regardless, looking for causes of opacities in lungs, eventually led to possible aspiration.. failed peristalsis, but suggestion fundoplication if medication & lifestyle changes don't help. Protonix, and bigger wedge, blocks helping some.
Question: But lots of meds i need to take repeat for hours and leave a terrible taste and fill my mouth with something (not acid reflux). hard to speak clearly and not quite painful but uncomfortable. Anyone else have this? Any suggestions to help with this?

I deep wet Belch over 2000-3000 x a day and night . Everyone ( they are one after other even propped on 3 pillows high and a small memory foam pillow on top ). They are not only coming up from gut but at 5/5 am start coming up from my intestines ( bowels ) all the way up and out of my mouth . I eat clean and healthy but doesn’t matter . Tastes like gut lining or sewer water .
It’s horrendous!
I suffer day and night with this going on 9 years.
6 Gastro Drs , 20 tests , 7 diagnoses.
Doesn’t matter even if stomach empty, I suffer .
Nothing holistic on market works ( I’ve tried it All ) , no RX helps , I live on Ultra Pepto only .
I’m seeing a functional medicine practitioner on the 11 th . I’m praying to get diff tests run that traditional GI ‘s don’t do .
My PCP has no clue what to do .
I’m considered a medical mystery because my symptoms are so severe and nothing helps .
I’m really at my wits end . It sucks all the joy out of life .
I hope you find your answers too .

@lgumerman - Have you heard anything back from Mayo in Phoenix since you applied? If not, contact them again to check on the progress. It appears that GI appointments are in short supply.

I call the referral sept cause they don’t allow a patient to contact the GI dept directly. They suggested I call every week to see if they have any cancellation. It has been probably a year since I got accepted to be on the waitlist to get called to even schedule an appt. Many days I feel like I am dying, but what else are my otions? Patients must just die waiting to hear from Mayo. I am very depressed and discouraged.

How does you doctor check your biome. On naturopath wanted to order a fecal test for biome but my gastroenterologist doesn’t believe there are enough scientific studies showing that that method doesn’t reveal the true biome. Buy he doesn’t have an alternative test. What shall I do? Liz

Do you have abdominal pain all the time? You have lost a lot of weight. Is it related to meals?
How long has this been going on?

I researched biome tests. Some of the companies that offer them have questionable credentials and/or poor Better Business Bureau ratings. The best test I found is from Life Extension, a company that markets pharmaceutical grade supplements and uses some of its profits to support anti-aging research. The comprehensive report goes directly to the patient, but it would obviously be preferable to interpret the results in conjunction with a physician. The standard opinion in the gastroenterology field, echoed by your gastroenterologist, is that the science of biome analysis is still in its infancy. I have a gastro appt in May (had to wait over half a year to get one), plan to print out the information from Life Extension about the test panel, which includes tests for pathogens (harmful microbes) and discuss it with him. The test is pricey, however, $499. Life Extension has a sale on tests in the spring, but I doubt that there would be much of a discount for this test, nor would insurance be likely to pay for it. Check it out though. At the very least you'll be better informed if you discuss testing with your naturopath.

My abdominal pain which is high up spikes 6-8 x a days and can last for a couple of hours each time. Virtually all the time. I have lost 28lbs because I don’t have an appetite mostly and now only eat very small portions of food. I have found hardly any food that makes it worse on better. I stay away from spicy foods. I have had this problem for about 21 months. I have mostly regular Bowel movements.
