Has anybody’s doctor told them to abstain from sugar because it feeds cancer cells ? Thank you Stephen Casper

Hi Stephen @firespooks, While we wait for other members to share their experience, I thought I would share a couple of references on the sugar and prostrate cancer.

" Should you avoid sugar with prostate cancer?
Here's another: If you are on ADT for metastatic prostate cancer, you are more likely to gain weight, and also to develop insulin resistance. One way to fight this is by limiting your sugar and simple-to-digest carbs. Bonus: keeping insulin down may also help slow down the cancer. Jun 22, 2020"

"Here’s where the myth that sugar fuels cancer was born: if cancer cells need lots of glucose, then cutting sugar out of our diet must help stop cancer growing, and could even stop it developing in the first place. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. All our healthy cells need glucose too, and there’s no way of telling our bodies to let healthy cells have the glucose they need, but not give it to cancer cells.

There’s no evidence that following a “sugar-free” diet lowers the risk of getting cancer, or boosts the chances of surviving if you are diagnosed."

From what I understand, there is no truth in the statement that cancer feeds or causes prostate cancer. However, what sugar can do, depending on intake amount, cause other issues that will have a bearing on your overall health, which affects any number of health issues. I believe moderation is a good consideration in all that I do. Once diagnosed with advanced metastatic prostate cancer, I have repeatably found myself questioning what I want my "quality" life to be like. I restricted my intake of a lot of things, only to eventually consider that a bit of chocolate and sugar is not going to end my life tomorrow. With several life threatening issues, I now consider my quality of life to be first on my mind. The emotional side of issue is where I tend to struggle. One thing is for certain, you do get to decide what is best for YOU!

I see a doctor at Mayo Clinic whose speciality is Integrative Medicine. She told me there is no direct evidence that sugar “ feeds” cancer cells. She advised me on my diet based on the research. There isn’t nutritional value in sugar and it affects body systems that along with other factors such as obesity, lack of exercise and stress contribute to diseases such as diabetes and high cholesterol. For that reason I have been eliminating added sugars from my diet.

Does this help?

FWIW I have inflammatory issues and food sensitivities, which sugar makes worse. Monkfruit powder or stevia drops or powder, no erythritol etc., works well for me. They are far sweeter than sugar (64..200X depending on the supplier and perhaps the batch and age of the sweetener) and too much tastes chemicaly. It takes some effort to adapt recipes.
Small measuring spoons (Pinch, Nip, etc.) are helpful.

Well said Gregorylynn. We need those quality of life reminders. It's about wellness of mind, spirit, and body the best we can.

Hi

Just now when I went to my bookmarked Youtube page, the video awaiting my viewing was precisely about this topic. I think they are legit doctors, but it is on my list of questions for my urologist on Tuesday ("Is Dr.Mark Scholz from the Prostate Research Institute legitimate?")

Anyway, here it is:

Look at the diet protocol for typical PET scans. It is a low sugar diet. The reason pet scans work is because tumors typically have a high consumption of sugar because they have a high metabolism. PSMA pet scans work differently so you do not have to be on a low sugar diet. Having said that, if the basis of a typical PET scan is the tumor's uptake of sugar, it would follow that reducing sugar may reduce energy availability for the tumor. I have greatly reduced my own uptake of sugar by reading labels, seeing which fruits have lower sugar content, and generally reducing portions . I am also doing this because I am on Orgovyx and I am trying to avoid the weight gain that so many people report. Worst case scenario, it will do no harm.
