Rezum for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Posted by scwhandyman @scwhandyman, Jan 26, 2020

I am 66 years old and have been diagnosed with BPH. I tried Alfuzosin unsuccessfully. My urologist recommended Urolift, but I have concerns about the procedure. Previously he had mentioned Rezum for prostates between 30 and 90 ml. Mine is 28 ml and he did not think this would be a problem. He is a younger doctor and this is a relatively new procedure. I expressed concern that since the procedure kills cells with steam would there be a danger of damaging the urethra, too much prostate, or the outer cover of the prostate. He said this would not happen. I have looked on line for resources that address this issue without success. Any assistance getting assurance that the doctor is correct is appreciated.

I had a urolift 2 years ago and all well till 12/8/22. Lot of blood when peeing. ER said a possibility of a mass in my prostate. Urologist did the scope but couldn’t be sure. Quickly did a TURP/TURB with several biopsy’s to check for cancer. NO CANCER!! Did a another scope to see why so much pain. It’s due to turp & biop. This Wednesday I am having the REZUM procedure. NOT looking forward to this again. You know, the pain, cath, and the worse of all the damn spasms!! Had many spasms after turp. I’m told all will be well after the Renuz. I am 68 with underlying health problems. Otherwise in fair health. Wish me luck. L W

@trees1 I understand the purpose of Urolift, but I'm surprised the doc did TURP on the way to REZUM. (S)He could have gone straight to REZUM after the Urolift. REZUM has fewer gotchas than TURP. You might want to ask.

Had to check for cancer first. If there would have been cancer, there were different routes to take. Thanks for the comment trees. LW

Had my Rezum water vapor therapy yesterday. I am in need of a gentle laxative. Hard to poop with a catheter in. Thanks. LW

I used glycerin suppositories, sometimes put two in there and it helped. There's the other route with psyllium husks in powder form, Metamucil. I also tried both the suppository AND the Metamucil and did my business like a king.

Think I’ll try the Metamucil. One problem is I still have the catheter in and it pains my penis to poop. To much pain. Nurse will be here shortly to check the catheter. Thanks for your help!! LW

You can do this. I completely "get" you. Been there.

There's a third option, which may work better with Metamucil, in case you're not doing it already, which is to UP your fiber intake. Your nurse may offer some suggestions.
When I was first cathed I basically ate pre-packed red-leaf salads, with some roasted chicken and topped it with olive oil & some citrus. This, with the Metamucil really, really helped. Legumes, low sodium and no sugar. Sugar in the gut, helps to feed bacteria that causes the UTI's we try to avoid. Apples, veggies and probiotics will get you through until you are regular. Ask your nurse about these things, they may be covered. I'm in Spain, so vitamins are really expensive- the curse of Spanish bravado- "we get it from food," as they stroll into McDonalds. LOL!

We're behind you. You can do this. One day at a time.

Nurse was here, wonderful person. Gave my wife suggestions to try. I’m starting with prune juice. Nurse is worried I may not make it to the bathroom in time. Only have to deal with this till Monday. Thanks. LW

Right on! I have a kidney situation because of prostate and pee retention, so I love prunes, but didn't suggest it. Prune juice is elegant. You have all you need. And back-up!
