My primary care doctor with the Veterans Administration insists that my lower left front rib pain (4 1/2 years now) is from postherpetic neuralgia from Shingles without the rash (which I don't recall ever having). Of course, he has never heard of Slipping Rib Syndrome. Has anyone else had that diagnosis? I had 5 other different diagnoses and numerous treatments from 12-13 medical providers, none of which helped...I am attempting to choose between seeing Dr. Hansen and Dr. Shiroff. Can anyone tell me if there much of a difference in there expertise, success rate, etc.?
I have hypermobile joints diagnosed as hEDS. Because this sounded similar I looked it up and found this at WIKI .... "Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is a condition in which the interchondral ligaments are weakened or disrupted and have increased laxity, causing the costal cartilage tips to subluxate (partially dislocate). This results in pain or discomfort due to pinched or irritated intercostal nerves, straining of the intercostal muscles, and inflammation. The condition affects the 8th, 9th, and 10th ribs, referred to as the false ribs, with the 10th rib most commonly affected." ...
Sure sounds like a version of hEDS. My subluxing leg and hip joint were fixed with prolotherapy to the ligaments connected to my hypermobile SI Joint, stretched out by walking with a leg length difference after a hip operation. Don't know if the rib ligaments can be reached for treatment but prolotherapy tightens "lax" ligaments. Try a Renenerative Medicine Dr. Mayo has some that understand hEDS.
Hopefully another member will be able to share their experience with Slipping Rib Syndrome. Are you able to share a little more about the symptoms you are having?
Why is this so hard to diagnose???? I've been to 3 different family physicians, a physiatrist, and have seen a chiropractor and have done PT. Not one of these doctors have even acknowledged slipping rib. I have paid thousands of dollars out of pocket to get no where. I called a thoracic surgeons office today to make an appointment and they won't see me until I go back to my family doctor (for the 30th time!) and have her do (another) exam and a chest xray. I just had a (3rd) time chest xray about a month ago at my doctors, but this thoracic surgeons office will not set an appointment to see me until I go to my doctor AGAIN!!! Are you kidding me??? How much money, time, tears, and frustration does a person have to go through!!!! I am beyond frustrated with the medical system in the USA!!!!

I have had these symptoms going on 3 years! I spend about half of my days in bed because I'm not feeling good, and the pain is better when I'm lying down rather than sitting. I explained to the thoracic surgeons office all of my symptoms, but they didn't seem to care. I truly believe it's all a huge money thing.....one hand feeds the other and they really don't care about truly helping people and getting to the root of the problem. I'm sure I could get my xrays sent to the thoracic surgeons office, but she was so insistent that go get another exam and another xray, that maybe they wouldn't accept it? I just saw my dr. last month!
I would LOVE to go to Mayo Clinic!!! I'm sure my insurance doesn't cover me going there though. I have Common Ground Health Insurance.

Research internet for drs that treat this and the ones you feel have great reviews you can email them and they maybe can help. I did that when I had a child diagnosed with syringomyelia and every dr reposted to me either by email, one even had their PA call me. I’ve so emailed pictures of cyst I had with a dermatologist and they helped me out. You can send them copies of your X-rays etc and they can steer you in the right dr Good luck
