Home oxygen

Posted by pml @pml, Nov 29, 2022

Recently my husband who has lung cancer had a serious breathing difficulty. The doctor has prescribed home oxygen for him. He will be getting one of those portable oxygen tanks that produces their own oxygen from the air. Has anyone had any experience with this and is it a good thing to use?

Thanks so much for your suggestions! We could use prayers too!

wow, 17 yrs on 02!!!
my mom used the liquid 02 while at home. fast forward 16 yrs and now I just started..... for totally different reasons. mom had bronchiectasis. dad had pulmonary fibrosis. I've never heard of my issue...... but over the years I noticed my pulse ox would desat while sitting (even at drs office), plus extreme fatigue, wt gain, and high blood pressure. I've had pulmonary function tests, ct scans (all normal) BUT the common thread that I needed to point out to my dr was that chest xrays dated back to 2016 almost always showed left Lower lobe atelectasis!!!!

with medicare, I have the big concentrator in our closest with 50 ft tubing. it almost gets me to the kitchen. they provided the mini tanks that I put in a backpack to walk the dog or ride my bike.
next week I'm flying on SW. im getting their 17# portable concentrator that is on wheels, plus enough batteries to last the day of travel. I sure hope in time I'll qualify for the Inogen. I still want to ride on the back of my husband's motorcycle and we do lots of camping. we finally found the perfect travel trailer.

Hi!
My husband finally got his home oxygen unit! It is just the thing he needed to use in between his inhalers and nebulizer. It has helped him immensely. He is much better now to the point that he has started to do his usual activities such as fixing breakfast, lunch and dinner, unloading the dishwasher, folding the laundry etc. We have decided to purchase a home oxygen unit. We weren't sure until we tried it. Renting is more expensive. A new one would be under warranty also. I want to thank everyone for their very helpful suggestions and for their prayers. That helped a lot!
Merry Christmas!

Hi. The answer is yes! I just got my machine a couple of months ago plus a portable unit. I'm taking the portable to the Carribean in Feb. It's great. I don't need them all the time, just after exertion (house chores, cooking, walking). I don't need it while sleeping. I'm sure your husband will benefit from it.

Just curious, are you aware what your oxygen level is when you are sleeping? (Of course, you would have to wake up and check it immediately, or have an overnight test of your oxygen level.)
I am using oxygen only at night, although I can use it during the day. My oxygen level stays above 90. usually well above 90, during the day.
I had an overnight test done while not using oxygen and the level dropped to 82% at times but averaged 86%. I had no symptoms so was unaware there was such a problem.
My respiration slows and is shallow when I sleep, which I think is the case for people in general and that creates the problem.
Just something to consider. I expect your doctor has already and feels you are fine.
