When is it recommended to get bivalent booster if I have Long Covid?

Posted by moebecwest @moebecwest, Dec 6, 2022

I tested positive for Covid on 9/15/22 and have had Long Covid since being diagnosed on 10/11/22. My last booster was on 12/10/21. I'd like to get the bivalent booster but wanted to know if it is prudent while I still have symptoms of Long Covid.

I have had long Covid about 2 years and my doctors recommended the booster 3 months after testing positive for Covid. So in your case after 12/15.

Sorry but in my opinion and I’m not a dr but have had a stroke from my first and only Covid jab. I would say you took your jabs and you still got Covid don’t you think 🤔 maybe you’re playing a dangerous game another jab and you could end up like me with some terrible side effects. Just saying. Please do your research on adverse side effects. Please

Did you already ask your doctor and coming here to see what others say? What does he/she say? What are your long covid symptoms and how severe are they? Good luck.

I still am experiencing fatigue, headaches, dizziness, cognitive limitations/brain fog, light headedness, body numbness/tingling all over and difficulty sleeping. However, all of these symptoms are improving. Other symptoms that I had, such as head congestion, post nasal drip, sore throat, stomach cramps, acid reflux, nausea, body aches, have pretty much resolved and I seldom experience them. My doctor recommended waiting 3 months from when I tested positive on September 15, 2022; so, that would make the booster due around December 15. I am curious if anyone has experienced a negative response (e.g. triggered worsening Long Covid symptoms or returning of Long Covid symptoms) after getting the bivalent booster.

I asked the research director in my UIC/ Mayo study and she’s there’s been no clinical studies done so they had no recommendation either way since there’s no data.

Why don’t you get ur antibodies checked first & see if you even need a booster? My antibodies are still high after 17 months. Also, my neighbor is in a study & she still has antibodies after being one of the first reported cases of Covid (2.5 years ago?)…

I had long Covid starting in late May. My main symptoms were elevated heart rate, gastrointestinal, and anxiety/depression. With medical treatment, my symptoms were resolving in August. I am a woman in my 60s and my son was getting married in October. I consulted with my doctor, and we decided that I should get my second Covid booster at the end of August. (Bivalent was not yet available.) The gastrointestinal symptoms and anxiety returned. With a careful diet and medication, I was able to enjoy the wedding. However, the return of the long Covid symptoms have made the past few months very difficult for me. I think I am turning the corner and finally starting to feel better again.
Based on my experience, I would recommend that you wait at least 6 months after recovering from long Covid before getting a booster. Getting your antibodies tested before getting the booster might also be a good idea.

Not sure given the mechanism of how the vaccines work that you need to seek responses to just the bi-valent vaccine, esp. given the sample size are so few and represent a short period of time.
For what it's worth I have been dealing with some long covid type symptoms that appeared about 3 weeks after getting my second Moderna shot. I have no idea if the two are connected. I had covid about a year prior (3-20). I heard early on speculation of ow the vaccine might or might not disrupt one's immune system, and not sure if there is strong consensus on that now? Not sure having long covid makes a difference in terms of negative long term effects? More docs seem to be basing recommendations in general about the vaccine based on risk factors, previous responses to having covid, age, etc. I was hoping that these and other issues you raised would be tracked by our health systems including long covid clinics. Hope the rest of your long covid symptoms clear out...

This is good experience. Can you share what study your neighbor is in and if there is a name for the antibody tests you two are taking? My study takes 16 vials of blood each visit to measure all sorts of things but not antibodies. I will ask them about antibody testing thanks to your post and sharing your neighbor’s experience also. Thank you.
