Dealing with Post Covid making depression worse, anyone else?

Posted by mamafluh @mamafluh, Jan 6, 2022

I have had many boughts with anxiety, sometimes feeling like I'm going nuts. I am BiPolar so struggle as it is. Being in pain all the time, not sleeping, missing out on Holidays and Birthdays has made my depression so much worse. I ended up having a first time episode of what's called Auditory Hallucinating. It's hearing sounds like music from a radio without a radio playing. It's rare according to what I have found online. It happened after two nights of no sleep in pain. Has anyone else had problems you've never had to deal with since having Covid? I also write on the Post Covid board as well.

Thank you for your kind reply. I don't have a PCP, and thus no access to meds. I try various supplements (GABA, ashwagandah, L-theanine) which sometimes seem to help a bit.
I wonder if anyone reading this thread can recommend any other otc products that might help?

Your local health department along with something like GoodRx might help. There are really good meds out there that work. My anxiety & depression are severe enough that St Johns wort, etc cannot touch them. It sounds like you need a prescribed medicine to me, although I applaud your attempt to solve your problems with herbal remedies. Good luck.

I am definitely struggling with this. Between the cognitive and physical symptoms, I’m really having a hard time.

I have delt with general anxiety disorder since I was 19, now I'm 69, but the anxiety since covid is different. The panic is unbearable at times but I have found relief with Buspirone, which is the first time I've taken medication. I am sure covid has contributed to the increased anxiety attacks, not thoughts concerning the pandemic, something physiological has changed. Many of us are in this together. I am sure treatment for us will come about from information we share .
After 1 year of post covid symptoms things are getting easier. I force myself to try new things and get outside even for a walk around the yard. I hope we can all put this behind us.

Hello everyone. Like most people, even amongst the more stable humans on this planet, are not doing well--globally. Exercise is the best thing I have found to deal with my anxiety and the flu hysteria. I have had COVID. Two years ago. I was sick for 2 months and am now 70 yrs old. I contact people by phone when I start getting 'stir crazy' and exercise, eat properly, so I don't gain any more weight as I gained 20 lbs in the past 2 years.

Omg yes although I haven’t been diagnosed with anxiety I very much also am dealing with the same issues (rapid heartbeats, shortness of breath etc). I’ve been dealing with covid since the 16th of dec and it has made depression very real for me…… from missing holidays to just overall human interaction and I dnt sleep at night at all and I’ve been up as long as 48 hrs where I also heard sounds and actually my name being called and no one was there. I thank you for putting a name on what I’m goin through and I hope for the better for both of us at this point. It’s definitely taking a toll on my mental state.

I have tried to use the things I learned from my DBT classes but have had very little luck. It's extremely hard to focus on anything when in the kind of physical pain I am experiencing. It's extremely exhausting, just adding to both my mental health and sleep issues. I feel like my brain is finding it difficult to understand what my body is going through. I have so many different types of pain, things I've never had to go through before. I'm at my wits end. I feel like my mental health doctors are the only ones concerned. I feel the rest of my doctor's have hung my out to dry. I'm tired of getting up every time crying having breathing problems.

So sorry for your pain and challenges. I feel like I`ve turned into someone else now... some changes for the good and others not. I feel others pain more now but depression is so much worse some days. Having someone to talk with is essential. Do you have a therapist? You can usually set up appts by device face to face or by phone. Keep reaching out and don`t withdraw every day. Feeling alone seems part of our condition. I`m lucky I guess cause my two youngest children are still home and need me. Hard some days but also a blessing. Since my long hspitalization, they act afraid to be away from me at all. Please hang in there. I had to set small goals and celebrate them. The day I could stand by myself and retire the walker were good days. Mental health and pain are invisible and therefore less understood by many but not all
. Hugs to you.

I went through 60 days of not being able to use my C-PAP machine when I had Covid because of my severe cough. I slept very little during that period. Now I find that I am very forgetful, say strange things sometimes and lose my train of thought and word recall frequently. I have also had an hallucination where I had a ten- minute conversation with a couple outside of my house. I went inside and told my husband and later found out it didn't happen. I just saw my daughter's truck with the smashed fender repaired. It wasn't repaired. I don't know what is going on.

I've heard that a certain amount of "brain fog" is normal after covid & would say I've experienced it. Had covid last April, but the brain fog was slight and is gone now. My other longer-term reactions were fatigue and strange skin eruptions / pimples in unusual places. These reactions have ceased as well. My suggestion: work on maintaining proper nutrition, diet & exercise if possible. There are some supplements designed for overall brain functioning - they might be worth a try. Just search "brain supplements" on Amazon. Be safe - look for proper testing and manufacturing practices & read the reviews, both good and bad.

I too have been experiencing strange symptoms since having Covid in May. My PC has said I probably have long
Covid and increased my current depression med(Effexor) from 150 to 225 but it hasn't held my depressing at all. I'm on Effexor to also treat pain from back surgery, pseudo gout and severe arthritis in my right knee. I have a phone appointment today with a psychiatrist to hopefully try a different med. Any suggestions?

@gretch, how did the phone appointment go? Has the increased dose of Effexor started to help?
