blood in urine with no cause
Have blood in urine. Had all tests of bladder and kidneys with no cancer cells anywhere. No pain, no other symtoms. Anyone have any information as to what may cause this.

I have no color but microscopic blood was found. I am 62 past menses and not sexually active. Recent colonoscopy was clear. I have multiple auto immune diseases and take immunosuppressants. I take opiods to manage pain and am constipated so I take a stool softener daily and relax once a week with high fiber diet including daily Miramax. My rheumy told me I have alot going on with just my AI issues. He suggested I think about seeking further investigation with a urologist. Given I am on immunosuppressant medications, I have decided to check it out further. I am wondering if anybody knows what the urologist might order in terms of tests to rule out bladder cancer as my rheumatologist mentioned that he is concerned I may have it due to the medications I take.
I ultimately had a kidney biopsy after years of bright red blood in my urine. It showed that I had Focal Hypertrophic Mesangial Glomerulonephritis caused by untreated strep throat. There was no treatment and I was told not to expect it to progress. Fast forward 25 years. My kidneys were failing and I went on dialysis for 5 months. My precious Daughter donated a kidney to me. That was 20 years and all is good! Hope this helps someone. It helps to go to a teaching hospital. I am being followed at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
Thank you also much for sharing your experiences, @coquifoife.

There are several things which can cause this beyond bladder cancer. Kidney failure. Liver. Prostate cancer, urethra, penile cancer or sores. I have a form of amyloidosis (Gelsolin) which has toughened up the tissues of the valve, and occasional it is tough getting the catheter in. When this happens, I invariable end up with blood for a day or two. The only cure is to go gently with the catheter. I sometimes have to wear a pad in front.
I have had microscopic hematuria since I went thru menopause. It is classified as "idiopathic - no known cause." I have had the following tests: cystoscopy; MRI with contrast; CT scan with contrast; renal ultrasound; urine cytology, you name it. It has been attributed to very low estrogen. I have always been on the thin side and have refused any kind of hormone therapy. All of my diagnostic tests have come back normal. Microscopic hematuria (idiopathic) is very common in post menopausal women. I hope this helps.
