I'm sorry for what you're going through. Sounds like you tore or severely injured the patellar tendon which connects the quad to the knee from the front. Your kneecap would be loose, but this should have required surgery, I think.
Once a tendon is torn completely, it can take a long time to heal. Stick with it. It's hard but I believe it will get better with time and therapy.
