Is this melanoma?

Posted by jake06 @jake06, Mar 5, 2022

I had a question, I don't know what this is on my foot, i just noticed it today. Is it melanoma, a blood blister, or some kind of mole? It's on the bottom of my foot.

@jake06 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect!

While I understand you are rightfully concerned for this spot you discovered, the introduction while signing up as a member reminded you we are not medical professionals here. So, we cannot diagnose anything. I am a melanoma survivor [my right forearm, needing 32 stitches!], plus squamous cell, basal cell, anodular basal cell cancer and actinic keratosis.

I have added a link to an article from Mayo Clinic on skin cancer, from their website.
My best suggestion is to have your primary care doctor look at this area, then determine to send you to a dermatolgist, unless you can self-refer. Meanwhile, think back on your skin history and possible risk factors, as your medical team would like to have that information going in to a full body exam.
Will you come back and let me know what you find out, please?

It doesn't hurt or itch but it is raised from the skin. Seems a little red around the edges.

Hi @mr3143 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Members in this forum aren’t medical professionals so we can’t diagnose or offer treatments. I know you’re hoping for an answer about your mole but none of us are qualified to make that call.
Anytime there’s a change in a mole or area on our skin it’s a good idea to have it checked out by a doctor or dermatologist. So for your peace of mind, that would be my suggestion.
Has this mole changed recently in size or shape?

Thanks. I'm not sure. I will monitor over the next few months and see if there is a change.

@mr3143 Lori has given you great advice. I wanted to share my husband's experience of a bump that did turn out to be melanoma.

I was concerned because it had grown for a year and it broke through the skin. It was the color of a pencil eraser and the same size and rounded. Don't take that as a limiting criteria, because melanoma can be different colors. The dermatologist didn't recognize it on sight, it was only when the biopsy came back, it was a stage 2a melanoma, and suddenly he was on a fast track to surgery and a skin graft.

It was fairly large, so removal is easier if things are caught sooner when small. I learned that moles also go through stages as they become precancerous, and I had a similar one that turned out to be abnormal. He has had a lot of those removed too, but this melanoma did not start from a mole, it came from under the skin . If you are worried, a dermatology consult is your best bet. Most things can be easily removed in the office before it becomes an operating room event like my husbands did. He was lucky it had not spread, and genetic testing reveals he is at higher risk for cancers, so we remain vigilant.
