can magnesium citrate for constipation cause night time thirst

Posted by bani @bani, Nov 18, 2022

I take 150mgs of magnesium citrate for constipation with dinner. I notice that I wake up during the night with a dry mouth and increased thirst. Is there a connection?

Hello @bani, Welcome to Connect. I've taken the liquid magnesium citrate for constipation but never thought about dry mouth and increased thirst as a side effect. There are also a lot of other causes which could be in play. One that causes me a lot of dry mouth issues is breathing through my mouth at night when sleeping. Usually made worse by sleeping on my back. I also use a CPAP which doesn't help with the dry mouth problem.

I did find this study that mentions a connection.
"Dry mouth is found among people who take Magnesium citrate, especially for people who are female, 60+ old, have been taking the drug for 6 - 12 months."

Have you discussed the dry mouth and increased thirst with your doctor?

Hi bani,

Yeah I've noticed an increase in thirst, during the night and even at times during the day. I too take magnesium citrate. I think the reason is that magnesium citrate draws water into your intestines to soften the stool. That could very well make you thirsty if water is being diverted to other uses.

I've compensated by just drinking more water. Hope this helps. Joe
