Hair loss from PMR or Steroids?

Posted by abbeyc @abbeyc, Feb 12, 2022

Hello, my PMR started mid December 2021 and I've been on steroids since early January (so about 6 weeks). 12.5mg for a few weeks, now 20mg. I'm noticing my hair is thinning and I'm nervous. Anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if it's the PMR or the steroids causing the thinning and when it will stop. Anything that will help?

i have had hair loss for the past 2 months. very depressing. the odd thing is that after starting pred @50mg a year and a half ago, i am down to 3 mg. it was only in the past 2 months that i started losing hair. my derm said it can happen even when tapering down dosage. anyone have this occurance? rogaine biotin and special weekly shampoo do not seem to work. i pray it stops.

Nutrafol Women, silk pillowcase and hormone replacement therapy seem to help with my hair loss. Heart breaking! After 18 months I'm down to 1mg and it seems to have stopped. My New Years goal was to be off the big "P" 😉

I had dramatic hairloss due to an illness and the dermatologict suggested raising my biotin to 10,000 mcg. That is probably more than any of us would get ordinarily. But I did and I have stayed on it and have had no hair loss due to pred. Also it has helped my nails. (BTW: It is what we give to our horses when then have hoof problems, So it is the real deal, but it does take a while.)

I’ve just been put on MTX 10 mg with Pred 15mg … Folic Acid daily 5 mg. Also take Marine Collagen capsules and Omega 3. Started MTX a month ago. All good so far. The supplement you mention is incredibly expensive, if you don’t mind my saying!

Do you know if the nutrafol made a difference or maybe the HRT...that's a question just to be clear. I loved being on HRT but alas it messed up my thyroid so I had to stop. Now I am just really old. But losing my hair is so upsetting. Every time I see the Nutrafol or HERS commercial I think about it. The thing that stops me is all of the meds I am taking...a lot and about to add another. So I am asking if you know which has made life.better if you know and did it stop the loss or support growth. Ok thank you
Be well!

I use Viviscal along with Biotin. The shedding slowed down. I think a lot of this is from stress also from pain.

@abbeyc, A friend and I have a saying about waking up to something new: What fresh hell is this? Yes, Prednisone is awful, but necessary. I think I had all of the side effects, but hated losing my hair. My hair almost grew back the way it was before taking the Prednisone. A friend is not so lucky. She has three wigs she wears. I could not do this because my scalp burns. It takes time, but your hair should grow back. With all good wishes, @joybringer1

Yes, definitely hair loss. Almost 3 years now on Prednisone. I wasn't sure if it was the Prednisone or the fact that I had just finished my breast cancer treatment when I developed PMR. Once my hair grew in from chemo I thought, great, it's come back curly and thick. No such luck. Three months later when I was diagnosed with PMR my hair had thinned, lacked volume etc, so I wasn't sure if it was the Prednisone or the cancer treatments. I am now sure it is the Prednisone as so many of you are experiencing the same thing.
