albuterol inhaler and mucus removal device to get mucus out

Posted by @ling @wangling, Nov 10, 2022

Hi community,
I have bronchiectasis, my pulmonologist asks me to use the albuterol, then use the mucus removal device to get mucus out of my lungs. I am reading the posts, it seems you all use nebulizing with 3% saline or nebulizing with 7% saline. Anyone use what I am using and successfully control infections?

Many thanks in advance.
Ling

Hi Ling,
I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis & MAC five yrs. ago. Fortunately I have remained well which I attribute mostly to masking, exercising & using my Pari nebulizer. My pulmonologist initially prescribed 3% sodium chloride, but I requested 7% after reading about it here. It irritated my throat so I mixed it with my leftover 3% & after a month or so, I was able to use it without any problem. I also believe it stopped my hemoptysis which had become a regular occurrence.
I hope you also have good results from airway clearance methods! Take care, Linda

@wangling... I use albuterol twice a day in my nebulizer with two other asthma meds. My MAC infection was in the lower right lobe and destroyed its function. Albuterol opens up the airways enough to allow the mucous to drain out, but recently I needed to add a flutter device to move the deepest mucous, since my bronchial tubes are now closing when I cough. I used to get infections when I couldn't get enough albuterol. I'm doing well now that I have a larger prescription on auto refill. I use postural drainage daily. Made it through COVID without complications. It's the right med for me.

Hi hcroom,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. This is a wonderful news for me. Could you share the brand of the mucus device you like? I got mine from Amazon. It is great to know that you have been doing this for years, apparently it is working. How comforting that is to me. Did you avoid infections by doing this? I was wondering if I could get all the mucus out, especially the mucus at the bottom of the lungs.
Many thanks again!

The best flutter device is the Aerobika according to studies. The white mucus mentioned earlier is a question i have as well. In the past 6 months i have started to cough up very white foamy mucus along with the usual colored. My pulmo does not seem to feel it has any particular significance but i wonder if it is related to heart issues.

I use the Aerobika attached to my nebulizer. That way I inhale the albuterol and then exhale through the device. I have had no lung infections since I started this regime. Good luck to you!

I have yet to try it this way. Do you also use saline after the Albuterol or? Do you ever get heart palps or headaches from the Albuterol?

Thank you so much irenea8 for your response. Yes, hcroom also uses this one. It seems pharmacies don't carry this product. I will call the manufacturer tomorrow to give a try.
Thanks again.

Many thanks Linda for sharing your experience in dealing with MAC and bronchiectasis. Looks like you have it under control. That is just wonderful. I do hope by masking, being active and clearing airways will help me to avoid more infections.

Many thanks again.
