Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

yes..76 and a half...oh shoot..closer than that now...oh well...in my mind I'm not that old at all! I have been doing Clinical Effects for about 3 months now....I feel it's helping with everything collagen does do for us. Glad I inspired you! we all need that!

Hello All....well...I'm now 78...and am still taking collagen everyday. I have switched to the "Code age" brand..as it has all 5 of the types needed. The container is for 63 servings...comes in many flavors and unflavored as well. I get it through VitaCost or sometimes the website itself... I've been very happy with the results I'm feeling and seeing these days. Not getting any younger..but I feel better then ever and feel younger than my chronological age as well. I'm also still taking all the supplements concurrent with assisting osteo..and arthritis..and bloody well everything else aging throws at us! I recently found a CBD tincture that, while spendy..amazingly does take away my back pain(compression frxs.)..like right away!! I save it for the days when even my hot packs or infrared belt doesn't help and I don't want to take oxy. There are so many CBD products out there...one has to really rely on others experiences..good and bad...ask a lot of questions...what sells better...??..I found this late at night on in infomercial...but that doesn't mean his product isn't a good one....and he was doing a BOGO...so I went for it. I can see what the difference is with product and others. I'm happy that so many of you have proudly added your important voices. I'm in awe of 'thee' who are doing so much each day!! Gives us all that swift kick in the 'arse' to keep moving! Best to you all!!!

Has anyone heard about taking collagen to help osteoporosis? I’ve read several article about this. Anyone have any info on this?

Hi @sliteral, My wife and I take collagen peptides mixed in with our morning coffee which I believe has helped my wife at least with her fingernails after doing a little reading on the benefits. Here's an article that provides some information on the benefits.

"Studies show that taking collagen peptides may be helpful in treating and preventing osteoporosis. Collagen also makes up as much as 10% of your muscle tissue, so collagen peptides may be helpful to people with sarcopenia (a loss of muscle mass), too."

I have my own homeopathic & MD ordered regimine myself. I take vitamins K & B-12, because I am a regular laxative and fiber user. Frequent laxatives use can deplete vitamins K & B-12 synthesized in the large intestine and cause anemia or heart problems. I take vitamins, D3, A, calcium 1200 mg per day, all ordered by my team of physicians. Vitamin E for skin, hair, and nails, vitamins iron and muti-vitamins with iron. I also have hormone therapy estrogen & progesterone for bone and muscle health. Recall that estrogen is the primary component in bone matrix for women. I request by physician an order for a full blood panel and include an Ionized Calcium (check for signs of bone cancer & CA + 125 to check for signs of ovarian cancer, since I take estrogen as a 65 year old woman. I take diclofenac for joint swelling and pain when I need it. I have never smoked, used illegal drugs, no family history of female reproductive or breast cancer or heart disease. However, I am taking a risk, but so do smokers. I'd rather still be walking. I'm an insurance agent and I have really good insurance to support Medicare, so my out of pocket expenses are minimal. However, I'm always looking for new remedies to slow aging and enjoy life. Best, Lynn.

What type of calcium do you take....

REPLY

I'm taking 600mg x2. Once in the moring and once in the evening. I buy them at Walmart which may be in capsule form or the hard oval shape. If I get the hard oval capsule I grind them with a ball & morter pill grinder along with other hard vitamins. My calcium amount was physcian prescribed.

Hello @cpb Collagen is a protein component of all connective tissues in the body including bone and skin. When bone is formed or healing as in the case of a fracture, a collagen fibrous network is laid down first and then populated with the cells that create bone. If you eat meat in your diet, you are eating collagen. Bone has to have a tensile strength so it has a bit of flex for shock absorption which it gets from collagen. It sounds like your friend had some good advice from her physician.

I’ve been vegan for 30 years and that was my first question! The answer is no. There are collagen BOOSTERS that help you promote your own collagen, but no actual supplements. Sadly it is only animal or fish based for extra. Things like DHA you can get algae based, but not collagen. Hope this helps
