COLD URTICARIA

Posted by jodan @jodan, Nov 10, 2022

Has anyone had a reaction on their skin when exposed to anything cold? My skin will get very itchy, turn very red and then become painful. I can’t drink or eat anything cold because l get severe pain across my upper chest. I was told to take a daily antihistamine (Zyrtec) for a month or two. Don’t know what is causing it
Appreciate any input.

Welcome @jodan, I know it has to be frustrating not to know what is causing the cold urticaria but from what I've read it's a rare condition and there doesn't seem to be any known causes. Here are a couple of articles that provide more information including standard therapies and treatments:

-- Cold urticaria: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cold-urticaria/symptoms-causes/syc-20371046
-- Urticaria, Cold: https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/urticaria-cold/

How long have you had cold urticaria?

It started to become severe this September. The Zyrtec has helped to alleviate the itching part.
I have been taking the Zyrtec since October 27th. I have been told to take it for a month or two.
I guess I'll have to wait and see, and hope for the best. Thank you for your input. It is appreciated.

There are a few Facebook groups on the subject. I have good results with taking Beta Alanine during flares of COLD URTICARIA. It kills the itch and calms my skin…it is an OTC supplement typically used as a preworkout supplement. I take 750 mg every four hours as needed, which is a much lower dose then using it for preworkouts. If you take too much you can get a weird tingling felling on your skin…
