My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

The stomach area is the most fatty area and done on either side close to the navel. In my opinion and experience, the needle is quick and after there hasn't been any soreness. Of course, may depend on the nurse that is administering Evenity; also if the Evenity is given 15 min. prior to injections to warm up.

Hello everyone - I appreciated reading everyone's posts when I first decided to start Evenity this summer for the information and emotional support. I would like to give back with a post myself!

I am 58 years old with T-scores this summer of -1.8 in each hip (femoral neck) and -3.0 in my spine. My low bone density may be due to taking prednisone for 6 months when I was 30 as part of a chemo regimen for Hodgkin's disease. Luckily, my doctor thought to check my bone density with a Dexa scan this year to check for problems rather than waiting until I had a fracture.

I was able to get Evenity approved by Anthem Blue Cross. I mentioned to my endocrinologist that I've had some root canals previously and could need another in the next year. She noted that on her submission for approval to my insurance. Evenity has less of a risk of jaw necrosis caused by dental work than other drugs because it does not shut down bone growth. However, I am hoping that I won't need a root canal.

I recently started a weekly yoga class to improve bone density. I recommend looking at Dr. Fishman's Youtube video and reading about his research at https://sciatica.org. I also walk a mile 5 days a week, lift weights at a gym once a week and try to do a little yoga on my own at home. I also do heel bounces while the coffee brews that I learned about in the Facebook group called The Strong Bones Challenge. All of this is time consuming since I also work, but I know it is worth it! This exercise has also been good for my balance and sense of well-being.

I've had 3 Evenity injections so far. They were all done in my stomach and weren't too painful. I wear low-waisted pants for a few days afterward so that no waistband rubs the injection site. My stomach looks very slightly swollen afterward but not too bad. I wish all of you the best on your journey toward stronger bones!

The injections themselves are just a localized reaction- stomach was least bothersome for me. It burns going in-sometimes was worse than others. I wondered if the NP giving it always removed it from the fridge for 30 minutes. I had a different person each time at the infusion center, and they often changed my appointment last minute- had trouble staffing it.
Going forward I’m getting whatever drug is next at my endocrinologist’s office.
But the shots discomfort themselves were not the reason I stopped after 8.

@jerilk - yes for me it hurt every time. I am on the thinner side, so not a lot of fat on my arms or stomach. It swelled every time too, but worth it. I would do it again, but one can only be in Evenity for one year. My year is up, so I am going back to Tymlos, I have been off of Tymlos for a little over 2 years. It worked well for me last time.

Can I ask how long does it hurt going in?and how big was the swelling and does that hurt? Any other symptoms? Also arm or tummy. Like you I am very thin and no meat,flabby back of arms but that's it.

PS how bad is this pain ????

Hello everyone just found this group. I have been taking Evenity now for 8 months. Over the last 3 months I have experienced increased joint pain in my hands and now my feet. It started with just some stiffness in the metacarpal joint of my middle finger. Then progressed to my other metacarpals and now my fingers. There are sensitive areas in my hands and fingers. It doesn't stop me from doing anything right now but it is progressing. Since this all happened over 3 months it does concern me. So I guess I have two choices first to continue with the last 4 treatments and hope it doesn't get any worse, or discontinue treatments and hope the joint pain eventually resolves itself. Has anyone else had this type of joint pain or discontinued treatment and found the joint pain lessened or went away?

I wonder how much pain is "growing pains" as bones grow.

Hadn't really thought of that. I have a message into my endo guy. I really want feedback as to what is going on i.e. what is the cause of the joint pain. I'm 8 months in and I am quite willing to take whatever gains I have made. But I am unwilling, without just cause, to take the risk of more joint pain that may or may not take a long time to resolve if it does. Thanks for replying

I have a lot of joint pain today but am not on Evenity 🙂
