About to start Prolia: What's your experience?

I have one implant that I've had for several years. I schedule any dental work, cleanings, crowns, etc. at least six weeks away from my Prolia infusions and have not had any problems.

Thank you so much. I have a few for many years. Your post came just in time . I am early for my endocrinologist appointment and waiting in my car. I see prolia in my very near future . My 5 years on fosamax has not helped much .

Jen, this is my first post after reading many posts on this site. I am 74 and have been fighting osteoporosis for many years. I did try Fosomax many years ago and didn’t have any problems. Now I have severe osteoarthritis and after doing much research I couldn’t decide what drug to take because of all the side effects. In February 2022 I received my first shot of Prolia and my second end of August. Within 2 weeks the joints in some of my fingers were inflamed but the worst was my thumb. I also had hair loss that was corrected by doubling up on my multi vitamins. I saw my doctor on Monday and received an injection of prednisone for inflammation. I do want to mention that as I have aged I am more sensitive to drugs. I am not going to go back on Prolia and need to start thinking of my next step for my next appointment in February. I do have an excellent rheumatologist and he is sending me for blood work and is going to research and test me further to see why this happened to me. If I had a choice I would like to not do the drugs but try a holistic approach but there’s not much I can do. Seven years ago I fell down a flight of stairs and broke 3 major bones including my hip. So here I am along with the rest of you looking for answers. My question is does anyone on this site have side effects from the medicines they are taking and why they are not mentioned ? Hope this helps, just remember everyone’s body reacts differently to medication.

I took fosamax 5 years. No issues at all. Now a new journey . Where it goes I have no idea now.

I have had 4 prolia injections so far I have had no issues with it. Hopefully it continues this way...I am considering asking about the new one Evenity. I want to see if it might be a better option. I have also just added collagen to my daily routine. I will wait and see if it helps as well.

Good evening @gmacookie, glad that you are using Connect and posting your thoughts and considerations. As you may know, Evenity is the newest injection medication to treat osteoporosis. To date, it is the only medication that both creates healthy bone and then protects it from reabsorption. At this point, it is recommended for one year after which it can be followed by Prolia if you desire. Both are products of Amgen and you can always call them and talk with a medical professional about any issues you may have. 800 772-6436.

One of the cautionary factors about Prolia is that once you begin taking it, it is not recommended that you stop without running the risk of incurring fractures. As you probably know, unlike Evenity, Prolia does not create bone.

Please make sure you have read about, studied, and discussed your options with your primary care physician or an endocrinology specialist.

Have you had Dexa scan tests? What were your results?

Your post mirrors what I'm experiencing & I'm terrified of starting Prolia, there are so few good reviews & excessive bad reviews. I was hoping to clear my mind but have not done so. I'm at a loss to know what to do or where to turn.

I too am in a similar position. I took Fosamax for 4 yrs. Have been off meds for 2.5 yrs. My last DXA test shows I have progressed into osteoporosis. My doctor is prescribing Prolia. I am also terrified of Prolia. My mother was on Prolia and only experienced a small rash. My research on Prolia demonstrates it only buys you time. When you go off Prolia you very quickly loose all benefit over the next 12 months until you hit your pre-Prolia baseline. I know Prolia does not build bone. My question is when Prolia stops bone breakdown, does it still allow the bone building process to continue? I haven't seen a clear answer on this. Does anyone else know?

I have just completed 23 months of Tymlos with good results but now I have to do a different drug to maintain my gains. I am really opposed to Prolia.

I discovered that I should not do Reclast because my kidney numbers are already borderline and Reclast could make them worse. I cannot do an oral bisphosphonate because I have Barrett's esophagus. So, I really have a dilemma here and am not sure which drug would be appropriate. I have an appointment with my endo on Wednesday that was quickly scheduled when I discovered that Reclast would not be appropriate.

Did you end up using a different osteoporosis drug, and if so which are you using? I really do not want to lose my gains.

It just seems as if there are no osteoporosis drugs that are not problematic.
