Mayo CKD patients can get consult with CKD Patient Education

Posted by collegeprof @collegeprof, Oct 24, 2022

For those of you who are CKD patients at Mayo, there is a Department of Patient Education at Mayo Rochester which you can talk with a degree educator one on one via Zoom about CKD. My educator went through a PowerPoint presentation with me regarding all the different aspects of my stage of CKD. It is a primer, if you will, of CKD. This person is not a medical doc but is well versed in CKD. My educator, after the discussion, sent me a video link and other CKD references. If you are a Mayo CKD patient, you must make a referral for this with your Mayo nephrologist or NP and coordinate with Rochester as they will assign appointments not Arizona nor Florida. My experience with this was excellent. You may not get all the answers you seek as that is between you and your doc. The end result is a better understanding and perspective of your disease.

Hi Ginger:

As I mentioned in a previous post, I now have a wonderful Mayo NP who told me about the education program as well as the Cystatin C as the most beneficial way for determining kidney function values. I have some vein issues as well so she set me up with Mayo physical therapy where no outside vascular surgeon ever talked about. I don't know for certain but I am willing to bet that this department covers other issues as well such as dialysis, or other critical areas of the body. As I said, this program is in Rochester but must be coordinated with an accommodating Mayo doctor, NP, or PA who refers you to the program. The best thing about this is that the patient is the winner. For me, it took a couple of months for the appointment, but well worth the wait. It follows the path that the Mayo Patient Portal is the best I have ever seen with great interaction with my Mayo docs.
