AIP diet for autoimmune illnesses

Posted by bayhorse @bayhorse, Oct 14, 2022

Hi, all: I have celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, and was recently diagnosed with lupus. A nutritionist at my pc's office wants me to go on the Autoimmune Protocol diet, which basically eliminates everything except vegetables (though no nightshades), fruit and animal protein. In other words, no legumes, grains, dairy, eggs (and of course none of the usual "baddies" like alcohol and sugar). The aim is to eliminate lectin-containing foods, which nutritionist says can cause inflammation. I weigh 89 pounds, and cannot imagine how I am supposed to sustain this diet without losing weight. If any of you have done the AIP diet, please let me know how you managed. Thanks!

Thanks to all who responded to my questions about AIP diet. A BIG problem where this diet is concerned is that in addition to my 3 autoimmune illnesses (celiac spruce, UC, lupus), I also have congestive heart failure. So I absolutely have to watch fats and salt. And unfortunately, most of the high-calorie items on AIP (coconut products, bacon, chicken fat, meat fat, red meat) are forbidden to me! So I am left with only the leaner AIP allowables. The dietician who proposed I go on AIP encouraged me to eat lots of olive oil and avocado oil; I use both to cook with, but I have no gall bladder, so I don't deal with lots of oil/fats well anyhow. I did not get much guidance from her after I brought up my heart-related (and gall bladder-less limitations). Hence my hollering for help to all of you. 🙂

While I realize this is an elimination diet, I expect I'll have to abide by it for several weeks before I add things back in. Bottom line is I don't know how I'm going to get through those several weeks without dropping weight, and at 89 pounds, I don't have much to spare!

Another issue: Most of the recipes I've seen online are WAY complex and require more energy than I've got. And AIP prepared meal services don't suit as they won't tailor to my low fat and sodium requirements.

Someone asked re: scientific basis for this diet. The jury seems to be out. One Mayo Clinic article called it a fad diet, explaining that the lectins I'm told AIP eliminates are mostly destroyed or altered in cooking. However, some people say it helps... and I could sure use some help! So I'm very willing to try. But one day on this diet left me hungry.

BTW, I have been STRICTLY gluten free for 40 years because I am a severe celiac, and I eliminated refined sugar and sugary products from my diet 30 years ago. So I've had those bases covered for a long time.

If anyone has more suggestions after reading all this detail, please suggest away. And meantime, thanks to all who shared their thoughts.

your physical restrictions leave bananas, sweet potaroes, and salmon. Avocados? When I first started AIP, I made soups of the vwggies and sweet poato. You just throw into a pot with fresh organic herbs, garlic, basil, onion. Braise onion first in smsll amount of olve oil, then add sweet potaro to brown and crisp. Then organic grass fed ground beef. Brown into hash. Add veggies of choice. Include spinach, kale, celery, cabbage, carrot, parsnip. Can add fruit for a touch of sweetness, apple bananaa. SOME OK Grains. Arrowroot, buckwheat Biscuits. See AIP Facebook Group for yummy recipes. you can graze on soups and the hol over for two or tree da feastng. Berries allowed, So breakfast can be buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup and berries. Check out Facebook AIP recipes. It's not as bad as you think.

AIP diet includes coconut, olive oil, bananas, fatty meat, including bacon, chicken fat, meat fat for extra calories. The diet is not intended as a lifetime destination, but as a way to remove trgger foods, rest the body, and use a carefully stepped approach of adding the restricted foods in small quantties and certan sequences. Many have successfully added eggs, peppers, etc., after the elimination phase. The diet has helped me both bfore the Moderna vaccine 1 injury, and now as well, somewhat modified to include minimal cheese, some nuts. After the strict period of food exclusions, you may be able to reintroduce beans. But consider that they may be contributing to your health problems. All the best with your healing food choices.

Is there any documentation of reactions to the Moderna vaccines and auto immune diseases? The day I got my booster, my joints hurt, as in the pain moved from one joint to another. 4 months later, I test positive for ANA, 1:160 on a routine blood test. But I had no symptoms. NOW, I can hardly move in the morning and am trying anything (AIP diet, food sensitivity test) to feel better. In my mind, I think the vaccine caused a “dormant” condition to “awaken”. BTW, the last blood test said Sjogerns syndrome..

Consider eating low histamine foods and avoid fermented food, sugar, cured and processed meat, tree nut oils, and leftovers as histamines increase the in them.
Try using extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil.
Nightshades are also best avoided. Theoretically, you do this for a few weeks and then start slowly adding foods back in.
Best to you.

P.S. to my post above about AIP. When I said "animal protein," I also meant fish and shellfish. And no nuts are allowed on this diet.

P.P.S. I eliminated sugar in almost all forms from my diet nearly 40 years ago, so what's kept weight on me has been legumes, nuts, celiac-allowable grains, cheese and eggs. Hence my concern about losing weight on AIP.

Hello, I have Celiac Disease and chronic Epstein Barr Virus. I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus 13 years ago. I had to go on the AIP diet for my gut. It was hard but it worked. There are a lot of good recipes on the internet and cookbooks now. Last year, I got COVID and it triggered my Epstein Barr Virus. I have to go back on the diet to help me heal. I just keep reminding myself it is temporary. You will get through it. I made a menu for the week and keep repeating the same meals every week. It helped me stay on it and made my meal prep easier. Good luck!!! You can do this. Just remember - your body and health will thank you.

Eat a lot of fat . Add fat like butter coconut oil to your coffee. Personally I would eat eggs loaded with butter, not the same as milk and cheese have no idea why they always lump eggs in with dairy. Might be the whites. In the walh protocol she eats just the yokes. Way too many nutrients in the yoke to be left out. Have broccoli loaded with fats like olive oil or animal fats. By all means avoid seed oils like corn soy they oxidize at room Temps and especially at high Temps like deep frying. Dont eat any fried foods when eating out. I eat ham broccoli eggs frozen beef patties are real convient avocados sardines in olive oil and occasionally cheeses and raw milk that's about it.

Wahls is allergic to eggs so she structures her diet around avoiding them and later that applies to everyone who follows her plan. Since everyone’s sensitivities to food are unique, people following an autoimmune protocol should work to identify which foods do or don’t work for their body. Food allergy tests do not tell all, there’s more work involved.

Maybe if you decide to try the diet you can focus on eating more avocados, nuts and seeds as well as drinking fruit juices to gain calories and keep your weight up.

To gbny1224: I am on AIP. No eggs allowed, and must absolutely AVOID saturated fat because I have heart disease and an artery clog. Hence, only fats I'm left with are avocado and olive oils. And don't tolerate oils in any large quantity because I have no gall bladder. Hence my distress in following this diet!

There is no documentation I know of. There is a government website to report vaccine inuries, which I did. I know of thre groups that are providibg support for vaccine injured people, whch may help you with empathy and heling suggestions in addition ti Mayo connect. "Stuff that works", a research group for EBV suffrers. The Epstein Barr Virus remains in the body of most pople to be rectivated when te mmune system is challenged, and has been linked to autoimmune dseases and cancers, as well as to chronic EBV flares. The other two groups are within Facebook: Neuro V Long-Haulers and Neuro V-6 Long-Halers. The first has thousands of international membrs; the second is a support group for sufferers of 6 mos or more. I believe that treating the vaccine injury means also treating the EBV reactivation. Stuff that works is particularly helpful for this, with the support staff collecting data from group members abou
