It would seem that there is an autoimmune component. Many people who have MC also have thyroid autoimmune issues. I would recommend that you visit perskyfarms.com The website is devoted to people with MC. I have found the information posted by users at this site really helpful. I was diagnosed with MC in 2012 and have lived mostly symptom free after making a few small changes to my diet.

Hi @kristimotch 🙂 what diet changes did you make?
And did you have terrible Distention??
I got my MC in remission from taking Lialda (as in i dont have the violent Diarrhea today) but the distention is still awful... and i am just not sure the distention is completely related to the MC.. Thanks!!

Hi shosh37,
Hi completely gave up on eggs and egg based foods like mayo. I eat very little gluten, unlike many with MC, I can tolerate some gluten. I also very rarely drink or eat any dairy products though I can tolerate hard cheese most of the time. I also take a really good vitamin supplement everyday and calcium/magnesium. I frequently had gas and distention which I know is miserable. I still get this from time to time-rarely- and it is usually diet related.
Again I would recommend that you visit and join perskyfarms.com, It seems to me that those of us with MC have so many varying degrees/problems with food/digestion etc. It was really good for me to read about the experiences of many of those on the website. You can also ask questions and will get a ton of feedback. I found many suggestions useful, many were not.

I have Thyroid, Celiac as well as MC, so YES

I read a book by Wayne Persky - "Microscopic Colitis - What Really Causes Microscopic Colitis, Celiac Disease, and Other Autoimmune Diseases?" and it briefly mentions that early research showed the CC was frequently associated with connective tissue diseases, including RA (rheumatoid arthritis), and several other autoimmune diseases. Is it true? Don't know.

I've had MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) since 1990, which is related, in my experience to people who have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyaligia, and even Sjogren's syndrome, like my sister has. We share a lot of the same symptoms. I also took Aleve for a long time, which could have caused it. Unfortunately, the LC is linked into my incontinence, but ONE THING AT A TIME!

Yes this is part of the autoimmune world. I have Lupus for 30+ years, Sjogrens, Raynauds and I was diagnosed with MC 2 years ago -
all related. I went gluten free and that made a big difference. I don't have Celiac; however, gluten does something to the digestive tract. You might try that. I have recently discontinued doing dairy as an experiment to see if there is any difference.
I have been having issues again and have an appt the end of the month with a new GI.
Prayers for good health again.

I read in a reliable source that autoimmune condition can cause this. I was just diagnosed and and trying other cures before any medicines, in my studies i ran across the auto immune

I was diagnosed two years ago with MC. Life has been a challenge...I was told it was an autoimmune disorder, but only given Budesonide no diet or other advice as the doctor thought it was a minor inconvenience...minor to him maybe, but changed my life! I tried the Auto Immune Protocol Diet for three months and can't say I saw much improvement. I have eliminated dairy, sugar, caffeine, gluten, and alcohol and still have flares that can last for days. I weaned off the budesonide and use Immodium or Lomtil to get through bad times. Then last December I developed Alopecia (confirmed by biopsies) which is also an autoimmune disorder. The doctor stated with one autoimmune disorder, I was 70% more likely to have another. I am 70 and Alopecia usually occurs in young children and young adults.
