Shortly after my first Covid vaccination in January of 2021, I experienced a severe flare of PMR which left me incapacitated. Not realizing that my symptoms were related to the vaccine, I went ahead with the second shot. When the symptoms persisted and became even worse, I saw my primary doctor, then a rheumatologist. Both doctors opined that the vaccine had triggered the PMR. With prednisone treatment, the PMR went into remission and I successfully tapered until I was able to discontinue the drug. When the third shot became available, I was in a quandary, not knowing whether to take it or not. I spoke to my rheumatologist who advised that people with PMR are at greater risk of Covid complications. He encouraged me to proceed with the booster and go back on prednisone if needed, since the effects of Covid can be dire. I recently received my fifth dose of the Covid vaccine and the PMR has remained in remission. After I had the third booster, I did contract Covid, but the symptoms were extremely mild, except for an autoimmune reaction of severe hives and facial swelling. Everyone is different and we are all just feeling our way through this PMR journey. Covid and the vaccines for it have added a new complication. Best wishes to all for remission and freedom from PMR!
