Can one stop taking prolia after the first shot?

Hello everyone, my mom is 84 year old and she got osteoporosis since 8 years. She took prolia last October. She started to feel a lot of pain in her legs now. I am thinking she shouldn't take the 2nd shot but I am afraid of the consequences. Did anyone here stop the prolia at an early stage!? If so what happened? Thank you

I got on this message board in hopes of getting more insight regarding reclast and osteoporosis. I got my first infusion about a month ago. It did not go well. Doctor is already talking about the next infusion in a year. Anyone else doing the reclast infusions?

I did but it was a real problem with my teeth. If you need implants or a tooth pulled some dentists won't touch you. Others will pull a tooth if is it's been month(s) since you had the infusion.
Reclast has been a nightmare for me.

You are correct that Boston is an amazing medical center with some of the best doctors in the country. Keep asking around and you'll find a doctor that makes sense for you. I would suggest looking for an endocrinologist who also has a practice where s/he treats osteoporosis. I tend to think of endocrinologists as understanding the body's complex systems and many health issues tend to be systemic in the final analysis.

i have an endocrinologist that treats osteoporosis at Beth Israel. she is the one discouraging me from Evenity in favor of Reclast. i have severe osteoporosis and need a builder med first. and i am super sensitive and i dont think i can survive a years worth of Reclast, or any drug, in one dose. i have an appt with another endo next week for a second opinion. even here in Boston, i am having difficulty finding curious doctors to untangle my knotted health situation. thank you for writing to me , callalloo~~~

i have an endocrinologist that treats osteoporosis at Beth Israel. she is the one discouraging me from Evenity in favor of Reclast. i have severe osteoporosis and need a builder med first. and i am super sensitive and i dont think i can survive a years worth of Reclast, or any drug, in one dose. i have an appt with another endo next week for a second opinion. even here in Boston, i am having difficulty finding curious doctors to untangle my knotted health situation. thank you for writing to me , callalloo~~~

I hope the second opinion doctor is helpful and that a fresh perspective, with a new doctor, leads to a treatment plan that you feel comfortable and confident about.

I took Prolia for years and it really helped. Moved to Arizona and doctor refused to administer so I had to wait months for a rheumatologist to give it to me and now my bones, teeth and nails are so weak and brittle. Walgreens, CVS and Urgent Care all refused even though I had the prescription in my hand...they thought that I should self-administered??

I took Prolia for years and it really helped. @smtakeya3 - I stopped after my first dose, but as far as I know, you cannot self-administer. Did the pharmacies give you any reason why they wouldn’t give you the injection?

In Ontario, Canada, pharmacies can give people only the flu and Covid shots - by appointment.

There are infusion drugs that are bisphosphonates that are administered every three months if you are concerned about the yearly infusion of Reclast. One of the quarterly ones is IV pamidronate and the other is IV ibandronate which is Boniva. I don't know much about them but it could be worth speaking to your doctor about them if you are apprehensive about a yearly infusion.

thank you for this information and support. i will share info i get from the second opinion endocrinologist next week. i remain baffled about why i should not try Evenity, before another bisphosphonate. i am completely apprehensive about a yearly infusion. i am so sensitive to meds and chemicals that i am considering not getting the Omicron booster. my three covid vaxxes all made me sicker for 6-8 weeks.

@kolika I am finding that there really is no perfect drug for osteoporosis. Each of them can be problematic in its own way. It can be scary to get any of them. The side effects of Tymlos are generally less so I started with that to increase my bones (it's one of the few that actually does grow new bone) and also to give me more time to decide what to do next.

If you take Tymlos (or Forteo) you have to immediately get on a bisphosphonate to maintain what you gained so right now I am leaning toward Reclast. I probably have until the end of the year, or until March of next year before I make that decision but I may stop Tymlos sooner than that. My legs are aching a lot and that can be a Tymlos side effect so I am considering getting off of it sooner.

JK Thank you so much for your reply and encouragement. I continue to go back and forth as to which of the anabolic drugs I should take for my severe osteoporosis (range -4.4 to -5.2). Endocrinologists say Evenity. The more research I do, the more challenging the decision becomes.

i met with a new endocrinologist, who wants to await results from my upcoming visit with a kidney specialist before prescribing. she is considering Evenity. and other drugs.
