@kimmyb I do not have diabetes myself, but my husband has had Type 2 diabetes, managed with medication and diet, for nearly 30 years.
I am familiar with the Dawn Phenomenon, as well as the companion Somogyi Effect. Without a pattern, it is difficult to tell which this was, or why it may have happened. At our home, it means we have eaten dinner too early the previous evening, and he did no adjust the size of his bedtime snack, or he skipped his bedtime snack altogether. Or if he sleeps in, past his usual breakfast time.
Was there anything unusual about the day or evening before this happened? Stress, feeling ill, type or quantity of food or beverages, new medication, when you ate, etc? Did you test earlier or later than usual?
So now, you get to play detective, and also be conscious of whether it happens again.

DAWN PHENOMENON WHICH IS NOT AN UNCOMMON EXPERIENCE FOR TYPE 11 DIABETICS AND CAN BE CAUSED BY MANY MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT FOR 22 YEARS AND HANDLE IT WITH INSULIN PRIOR TO BEDTIME. I USE HUMULIN NPH BUT I ASSUME THERE ARE OTHER TYPES THAT WOULD WORK.
ANY EXPERIENCED DIABETIC WILL TELL YOU TO REVIEW AND MONITOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE PREVIOUS TO ANY UNUSUAL EXPERIENCE AND CONDUCT YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY THEREAFTER TO AVOID OR REDUCE THE SEVERITY OF ANY SUCH EXPERIENCE. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS VERY SIMPLISTIC BUT IT IS A DISCIPLINE THAT DIABETICS MUST FOLLOW AND IT CAN BE EASILY DISRUPTED. GOOD LUCK.
HI.
When I was a Type ! I had that too, and now that I do not have diabetes, I still have a higher blood sugar in the mornings than any other time. Also if I eat before my blood test, my blood sugar seems lower than when I fast over night for some reason.
"NOW THAT I DON'T HAVE DIABETES" NEEDS SOME EXPLANATION. I AM OF THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE MEDICAL WORLD HAS NOT ESTABLISHED A CURE FOR DIABETES AND THAT A DIABETIC IS A DIABETIC REGARDLESS OF THE SEVERITY/EXTENT OF THE DISEASE. IN OTHER WORDS THE CONCEPT OF "BORDERLINE DIABETES" IS REALLY A FALLACY.
I AM AN ETERNAL OPTIMIST THAT EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS WILL EVOLVE TO TREAT THE DISEASE. YES BIG PHARMA SHUTTERS AT THE THOUGHT BUT IT MUST HAPPEN CONSIDERING THE EXTENT OF THIS DISEASE IN OUR SOCIETY.
So, when I had diabetes I had the Dawn Phenomenon then I had a pancreas tx, still working well . I do fasting and random glucose when I go do my standing order. and even with a 5.4 A1c I am higher after over night fasting. such as 101, verses 95 if I ate.
@ltssjs good post and recommendations. Just please don’t use all caps. That is perceived as yelling at someone. 😉
I am diabetic. Type 1, post pancreas transplant and Type 2. Yes all that. I have experienced the Dawn Phenomenon, Somogyi Effect and other complications. The best you can do is take meds as prescribed, follow the dietary recommendations and test regularly. Be as consistent as possible. Expect glitches from time to time because diabetes effects all other aspects of your health and vice versa. One of my past providers told me that even non diabetic healthy people will have spikes and drops in blood sugar. It is only a problem if it is too high, too low or too often. Hence aim for consistency and lots of testing.
I have been diabetic since I was 18. I am 71 currently. At one point I was on an insulin pump. I decided that I was dying with all the insulin I was taking. I was prescribed Trulicity and ate less than 40 carbs per day and my A12 dropped from 11.3 to 6.5. I took that med for 7 years. Last winter I became very sick and after suffering for months I figured out that it was the Trulicity. I have tried two other meds in that family and they also made me sick. She tried me on an old medication and I gained 10 in a week. I am now on a low dose of Januvia and my fasting was 260 this morning. She asked me if I want to go to Endocrinology. I am thinking at this point I need to. Anyone have any suggestions?
Ps. I don’t know if this is related, but I have had a UTI since last January. Right around the time I became sick from Trulicity. I have been on 9 antibiotics and no healing. I got a new urologist and he currently is testing for bladder cancer. My oncologist is treating me with imuglobulin infusions. I have never been sick before in my life.
COMPLIMENTS TO YOUR GOOD EYESIGHT. TREASURE IT!!!!!!!! NOT ALL DIABETICS ARE SO BLESSED.
