Veggies that are good for CKD3

Posted by nscappa @nscappa, Jul 2, 2022

I have been eating quite a bit of zucchini with onions and maybe an egg or two to make an omelet. Is this safe?? Also, on another subject, I have read that drinking too much water puts too much on your kidneys while others say drink maybe 4 8 oz. glasses???? Any suggestions re veggies? Is chicken too high in protein?? Many questions. Thanks!

@sammyloue Thank you for sharing. It is normal for a person's eGR to decrease over time and age, so you are definitely not alone there. And if you have been reading the posts in the kidney and bladder discussion group, you will see that your experience is not isolated. In my own personal opinion, most general doctors seem to downplay the CKD angle of things. There are quite a number of factors that can lead to kidney disease, including hereditary proclivities, lifestyle, and medication use. For years, when my doctors found out I was following a renal diet, I was told that wasn't necessary, but I do believe that is what kept my numbers from sliding down as quickly!

At your age of 94 1/2 years, you have a lot of wisdom to impart with us.

Thank you. As I have been thinking of my past medications I was taking Triamterene for water that could be accumulating in my ears, due to a hit on the head that caused my hearing to start going down and dizziness. Much later I read the papers that came with the med: said was not to be used long term. The various doctors continued to prescribe it, so I took it for many years. Finally a doctor made me stop taking it. Pretty sure it is what caused my CKD. All this is AFTERTHOUGHT. Oh my, doctorsss! Will they ever get on the same page? Just remembered I have athersclerosis, and I thought it was just the Carotids, but those records I got from the hosital showed I have clogged renal arteries. As I see it I am a very blessed person to live to such a ripe old age with my mind still working.

Hope this helps. I do not stay always on this list-I will be 95 on October. Stage 3a.

@gingerw , maybe some in this discussion would find my pdf recipe collection useful as long as they realize that some values and ingredients have changed since the recipes were written and know to ALWAYS read labels each time an item is purchased - even if they buy the same size/brand item all the time, manufactures often change ingredients and amounts. I no longer have the link to that pdf so maybe you could post it here?

I do not use recipes. And I can't find what "pdf" means; so I can't help you here.

@sammyloue, a pdf is a type of file the Mayo Support Groups permits members to post. Sorry for any confusion.

By the way, the recipe collection is not limited to recipes (which I never used either until I had to watch potassium, phosphorus, sodium, etc.,) it also lists nutrient values for various ingredients such as the amount of potassium in a tablespoon of flour or how much protein is in a serving of green beans. In addition, it has information about how to leach potassium from potatoes and other tips. And it includes a list of various resources for CKD patients to use in determining what foods and how much of those foods are good on a kidney diet.

I'm sorry you don't think any of this would be helpful to you. Am wishing you success in obtaining elsewhere the information you need. Peace and blessings.

Since I will be 95 next month I doubt if it will matter what or how much I eat! thank you very much for caring. I think it would take a chemist to follow all the rules..

@sammyloue, I hear ya - I had to use my backgrounds in chemistry and nutrition to come up with my renal friendly vegetarian diet. Yes, I do care and wish you well. 🙂

@petuniamom567 Yep, I have been in your shoes!

In my situation, my MRI was for a non-kidney related issue. However, seeing my eGFR was less than 30 already, so we opted to go with no contrast, For me, it wasn't worth the risk of going into kidney crisis with the dye. I was given the choice same as you. I closely questioned the ordering physician, to see what the difference would be if we went with a contrast or non-contrast MRI. In our opinion, the difference wasn't enough to take the risk. He had been leaning towards non-contrast, but wanted my input, which I appreciated!

Like you, I have some cysts on my right kidney. Recently, what they thought was a renal cell carcinoma tumor, was determined to be a "complicated cyst". The urologist told me he felt due to not seeing a movement of blood through the mass, it was a cyst rather than tumor.

Here is what Mayo Clinic has to say about kidney cysts: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-cysts/symptoms-causes/syc-20374134
And what Cleveland Clinic has to say: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/14884-kidney-cysts

Will you please let me know what you decide. I'm interested!

Hi @gingerw 😊
I see that you have a "complex cyst" on your kidney too. My doctor would like to do an MRI with contrast but I hate the idea of stressing out my new transplanted kidney especially while I have BK virus. Was your Radiologist able to determine the lack of blood flow to the cyst without contrast?
Thanks a million for your help!

@hello1234 Yes, it was done with no contrast. No blood flow detected.

You may want to get your transplant team involved regarding using contrast dye and dealing with the BK virus. And you know I will want to know their thoughts, and the outcome of your MRI!

Thank you so much @gingerw 😊
I am definitely going to discuss the contrast with transplant! Thank you for letting me know that they did your MRI without contrast and they were able to determine that the complex cyst lacked blood flow. That's excellent news and excellent information for me. I will keep you posted on my discussion. (On a different note, I just realized that I accidentally posted my MRI question to you on a veggies discussion. Sorry about that!)
Thanks again Ginger for responding so quickly and giving me valuable info! This is very helpful.
