Anyone taken Evenity (romosozumab) for Osteoporosis?

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, May 27, 2020

Has anyone taken Evenity? I understand it’s only been on the market for a little over a year. I’m hoping it will help with my severe osteoporosis. Any information is helpful.

I drink almond milk. I buy the boxed ones that come unrefrigerated at Costco. 2 cups a day provides you with 90% of you calcium.

@pami I believe that almond milk does not have calcium in it naturally, it is actually an added supplement. I just checked one of the popular almond milks and a prominent ingredient is calcium carbonate.

I have osteoporosis so protein is also extremely important and almond milk has very little protein. I have found Fairlife skim milk which is low calorie, free of lactose, and since it's ultra-filtered the calcium and protein are concentrated to have more than typical skim milk. Unfortunately it does sell out in stores and then there tends to be a lag of a few weeks during which it's not available but there are a couple of other manufacturers that make similar skim milks with not quite as much of those ingredients that are essential to me.

When I wrote that post originally I mentioned that I was lactose intolerant. That was something that came on very suddenly. After a few months of extreme intolerance it went away though and I can now have lactose! Fairlife, as I said, does not have lactose but that is now not as important to me.

Thank you for sharing that! I will look into that as an alternative to my almond milk.

Regarding Evenity, I am wondering if physical reactions/ symptoms to shot could be similar to having Shingrix Shingles shot? I was down for a day with Shingrix shot and my doctor, at the time, had difficulty walking for a day. Anyone else had this reaction? Thanks in advance for any input.

Thank you so much for your comments re Actonel. I took it for 8 years until a new doctor said I should have stopped at 5 years for a drug holiday. Discouraged, I never got back on anything and didn't have a DEXA as I wasn't ready for another drug. Obviously a big mistake! Other health issues took the focus off my bone health.
Now my bone density is seriously low: spine -5.2, femoral neck -4.4 and total hip -4.5, but luckily have yet to break a bone despite a few significant falls. Perhaps the Actonel did something but did not build bone. I have discussed my situation with my PCP, endocrinologists, and an endocrine surgeon (I have mild hyperparathyroidism). Surgeon offered surgery because of my bone condition but not sure it's worth the risk at age 76. I am grateful for the time and professional input of these doctors, but am frozen when it comes to making this decision as heart attack and stroke run in my family. I've had a cardiac ablation and am fortunate that it has normalized my heart function. I worry that introducing one of the anabolic drugs will upset that progress or introduce something worse. I know many of you have struggled with this decision and am grateful for your input. In the meantime I'll keep exercising and eating well and try to summon the courage to act.
Please share your "serious side effects," so I might assess if I can handle them. I'd especially like to know if dizziness and rapid heart beat are among the serious.
Thank you again.

Studies on eating dried plums have shown results of not losing more bone and gaining some. I eat 6 throughout the day and hope it will help my bone density which is currently at -4.1. I am also on Prolia and take Vitamin K2 MK7. Perhaps the prunes and Vitamin K2 will help. (Unless you are on Coumadin or Warfarin.) You can't take K2 if you are.

I guess that we should look also for proteins specifically because we have bones issues. Fresh almonds have lots of them and fiber and healthy fat but 1 ounce (28 grams) of fresh almonds delivers only 7% of our daily Calcium needs. Check if your almond milk meet the NOVA criteria for ultra processed food as apparently 95% do. Calcium might be added.
It is so difficult to find out what is really good for us. We must compromise I suppose. Good luck!

I have replied several times regarding Evenity. Have now had 8 injections. Doing fine. I have no heart issues so was a candidate. After 12 shots I will switch to Prolea. my only warning- every shot involves 2 injections. Make sure they give 1 in right arm and the other in the left. You can have soreness at the site for a couple of days. My dr said use ice when I get home and then take Benedryl. That has helped. I feel very good about my decision, especially since my osteoporosis is very bad and I am a very active 79 year old. Play tennis and walk and want to do so as long as possible. Good luck

Thank you! Very encouraging; so grateful for these positive comments. I too would like to continue to play tennis (carefully) and walk. Comments like these are helping me to move forward. I wonder why Benedryl?

I’m about to take #7 Evenity shots Monday- so far no problems!
I’m thinking I will take Prolia for maintenance as well- meeting with an endocrinologist in September.
By the way, you can take them in the fatty part of the arms, abdomen or thighs. I try to move them around and get one on each side.
I’m about to turn 64.

I think to reduce any reaction at the injection site.
