Anyone else affected by the Low Income Senior Housing Crisis?
Are any of you effected by the lack of affordable housing like we are, We want to move out of Texas. There is a two to three year wait list for our retirement apartment and we will find out in October about how much the rent will go up. More worried this year becase our set of buildings has been recently been bought. I have read frightening stories of new managers wanting twice the rent, other places being closed for remodling and then high rent prices.

@janet7, I hope this works out for you but be careful of scams. Scammers feed off seniors (or others) desperate to find houseing and willing to to rent sight unseen and pay ahead of time via online banking.
For reference to anyone looking to rent, here is good article about how to avoid scams.

Thank you Laurie for the article about how to avoid scams when renting an apartment. It is really helpful because there are many questions that need to be answered and never thought about.
We are north of Dallas, and the last time we moved over 11 years, there was a waiting list for one year, It has to be much worse now. They keep building new apartments for seniors here but they are starting at $2,500. Before we move, we have to make sure that we can get in! I cannot take 108 degrees here and the ranchers are starting to sell off cattle, they can afford feed (not much grass left and water for the catttle.
Did you try “A Place for Mom?”
I didn't! We are still independent, do they handle people who are independent and have a low inome?
This problem is Nationwide. I live in Florida absolutely nothing available. 5 year waiting lists.
There definitely needs to be more affordable Senior Living in every State.
I am moving into low-income senior housing tomorrow. I was on the wait-list for exactly four years. My name was about 5 from the top of the list when the pandemic hit hard, and then nobody moved out or passed away for two years because they were so careful and well - protected.
Very glad that you finally got in!!!! We need to move, cannot take the many days ove 100 degrees and toxic air. Our lease will expire on 12/31/22. I found some possible places in the state of Washington but my husband wants to buy a trailer and live in Hemet, CA.!
I applied for Senior Housing. There was a very long waiting list. However, they called me a week later. Everyone on the list had already found a place, so I got a one bedroom apartment for $540. They said because they’d raised the qualification income, so I got in! The apartments are one level. Just 35 apartments! I’m in Alabama! I’m 73.
