Hip Revision Nerve Issues

Posted by 7797 @7797, Oct 16, 2021

i had a hip replaced...after 9 years of pain they finally figured out i had a metal on metal hip. Extremely high Chromium and Cobalt pain etc. They revised it 5 years ago. i have loss of mobility and nightly painful muscle spams in my thigh. I'm taking Ropinerole ...not sure how effective it is....combined with Stretching and ice/heat ... i can get some sleep.
Any other treatment options. my nightlife consist of treating my hip

Hello, and welcome to Mayo Connect - I see that this is your first post. You will find a lot of helpful people here who will be glad to share their experiences with you.
I too had metal on metal hip replacements, and experienced heavy metal poisoning and many other side effects. Mine were discovered at 4 1/2 years, and replaced 10 years ago after I complained repeatedly, so perhaps less damage occurred in my legs.
When I was having trouble with muscle spasms and pain, a PT determined my gait was off due to limping badly for years. It took time and therapy, but once that was corrected things began to heal and the pain was better. I still have strange "ditches" in each thigh where the damaged tissue and muscle never completely recovered, but at least no pain.
What have you tried so far?

Hmm, the fact that stretching helps makes me think therapy might be useful too. Due to all the damage from the long-term metallosis, it could be that some muscles are going to need to "recruit" help to get you on the path to less pain.

Have you talked to your provider, or a pain management specialist, about getting a rehabilitative eval & PT? This would be a custom program for you, not a typical list of exercises and stretches shared with hip replacement recipients. My therapy included stretches, strengthening exercises, gait training (to improve posture & walking) - some on land, some in a therapeutic pool.

Makes sense. When you say provider… the orthopedic doc or family doc?

Either one, depending on your relationship with each. I happen to have a long-standing relationship with my ortho, who is a huge believer in exercise and PT, so I would go to him. But for many people, I find family docs are often more helpful when working on long-term problems. They are more likely to see you as a "whole person" and not just look at an x-ray and say "the joint looks fine."

After hip revision surgery...Why does it seem that so many people have damaged hip flexor muscles that never get back to 100%? Something in the surgery has to be doing permanent damage.

I had my total left hip replaced over a year ago, and had revision done August 2021. Still have pain standing and walking, bending etc. Pain returns after about 15-20 minutes of putting weight on my left hip, and then my lower back/left hip hurt like hell.
The only time it doesn't hurt is when I'm sitting down.
Any thoughts or comments?

Hmmm, after this long the pain should probably be gone. Have you been back to the surgeon to make sure all is healed properly? By that I mean the stem & cup are both healed into the bone with no movement, and the ligaments are not stretched or damaged. If so, my next step would be a thorough physical therapy evaluation and some stretches and exercises to get all the muscles back in shape. Another clue is the back pain - you may have an imbalance in your leg length, posture, gait... Again PT would be helpful.

What have you done so far? Did you have actual, in person PT after the revision?
