Revisions needed due to loosening of acetabular cup on both hips. Surgeon told me that the (original) hip replacements would last 10 years and sure enough, problems setting in on the 10th year. There were no problems at all up to that point and had an active lifestyle being that I was only 55 when I had the first implants.
This is them most common reason for revision after long term success. There have been improvements in that area beginning about 12-15 years ago, press fixing the cup & securing with a screw, that my surgeon told me has had good longer term success for younger, active people.
That is what I have, and was told it could last a long time, but the polymer liner in my acetabular cup will eventually need replacement. So far, so good (at 10 years) according to x-rays this spring.
Do you know what approach & replacement your surgeon will use? My current implants are a result of revisions done in 2012 after total failure of my original THR's (recalled ones - a very long story.) I learned from that very unhappy experience to question the surgeon about the plan, then research the components and approach very closely.
