High protein in urine, unsure of the results

Posted by mandm4evers @mandm4evers, May 10, 2022

I am nervous had high protein in urine, have a appointment with nephrologist. The doc did a lot of lab work. The bun is very high, and red count is low. They did a immunofixation serum. Results were
IgA lambda monoclonal protein is present.
Monoclonal 1 Is 72mg/dl.
Very nervous as appointment is not until next week. I have had kidney cancer so it’s not the idea of cancer it’s the unknown;) has anyone seen these results that give me a idea, any idea! Thank you!

Wow @gingerw !
You have been through a lot! Thank you so much for helping people like me who have absolutely no idea or no control over life! I think that is the scary part for me - no control!
I had Kidney cancer in 2010, so I have had scans and tests every year at Mayo! I have just the last 2 years relaxed with the thought that I am in remission:)
So I do apologize for absolutely having no clue:)
I will get more knowledgeable so I do not keep asking questions:)
Thank you! @ginerw @loribmt
You guys are the best!

@mandm4evers Oh, goodness, no need to apologize! You are facing something new to you, so getting accurate information you can refer to is important. Ask away! We are only a keyboard removed from a face-to-face. Pull up a cup of tea or coffee and settle in whenever you need to!

Oooh, I can really relate to the "no control" side of things, you're preaching to the choir here! What we can control is our response to everything. Deep breaths, information from recognized sources, having a support system that works for you, and maintaining a lifestyle that helps you thrive are all important.

To tag onto your kidney cancer, last year they thought I had a renal cell carcinoma and have been doing the watch-and-wait thing, especially given the other health factors. This last month it was determined that it is a complex cyst, not a tumor. So, that is one thing off the table for now, but I still keep it all tucked in a corner of my mind. So, in your case, they removed the tumor and were able to keep the rest of your kidney? Awesome!

It is so wonderful to get that diagnosis off the table;) i thought you had to watch complex cysts? Just because they can turn angry 😡. My dad had one many years ago, that they did ultrasounds on. Maybe they changed that;)

It is amazing how Mayo did the surgery. Split the kidney open like a book and then took out the tumor. They removed about a little more than half. So I have 1 and 1/2 of a kidney ;). Owe Mayo my life so many times I have lost count. Amazing

That’s a good question to ask your hematologist, @mandm4evers. Have you had the bone marrow biopsy? What did it show?

The bone marrow biopsy is used rarely enough that it reveals whatever the hematologist says it reveals. I prefer the "serum Free Light Chain" (sFLC). I have had several of each, and the sFLC seems to be considerably more consistent, although both can easily be ignored by various specialists. The more meaningful question is whether your urine in the toilet makes a foam. I track mine by how large the bubbles get, and how thick the foam is. Lots of foam often means lots of protein, which means Amyloidosis. Mine is Gelsolin and MGUS. oldkarl

I had high protein in my urine back in 1996 with lots of tests & finally having a kidney biopsy & gratefully biopsy was sent to Mayo Clinic…..I had a diagnosis of Amyloidosis….long story short….had a stem cell transplant March 19, 2007 & 15 yrs later still in remission. I still carry protein in my urine, but lower amounts that is checked…..Mayo Clinic Rochester, Mn….I sing your praises with God’s Blessings…..🙏❤️🥰

That is wonderful, that the stem cell transplant was a success! Remission is such a great feeling:)
Thank you for your help:)

It’s maddening to have to wait for information. Relax as much as you can until your appointment. I know it’s hard. Anxiety exacerbates my symptoms so when I can control my anxiety I feel better.

Let us know.
