Diagnosed with aperistalsis (without achalasia): How to improve it?

Posted by markmoran3 @markmoran3, Jun 22, 2022

Hello, I am curious as to how to possibly fix this or improve this a bit.
I have had a rough 7 months, going thru a break up with a loved one and have been drinking heavily for the 7 months. Is it possible that this is the reasoning behind it and subsiding could help improved? I am very nervous. What has anyone done with this diagnosis?

Hello @markmoran3 and welcome to Connect.

It is my understanding that you have recently been diagnosed with near A Peristalsis ( without achalasia). Is that correct? If you could share a bit more, it would help me to connect you with others who have this diagnosis.

Could you share how this was diagnosed, in other words, what medical tests were done? What are your most bothersome symptoms right now? Has your doctor given you any guidance regarding lifestyle changes, including diet?

New diagnoses are always stressful and I can understand your concern. You mention heavy drinking over the last several months. As this diagnosis appears to be a motility disorder, alcohol is definitely something to be avoided.

I look forward to hearing from you again. Will you post a bit more about this?

@markmoran3 -
Welcome!
You have an unusual diagnosis, quite rare. Let’s see if there are other members who are diagnosed with achalasia and motility disorders of the esophagus.
Have you lost any weight?
I’m sure you have had a few test done and possibly biopsies?
You must be very uncomfortable.
Have your doctors discussed any treatments with you?
As I understand it, in achalasia there is damage to the nerve cells involved in making the muscles move the food down- but in aperistalsis alone, the nerve cells are intact but the muscles don’t get the right message to contract.
Heavy alcohol use could possibly be a factor in many gastrointestinal illnesses.
Can you give us more details in how you were evaluated?

I dont have alchasia I have apricosis of the esophagus without that. So I am not sure if cutting out alchol and maybe stress will help restore it as one of the 10 test did come back normal.

Hello @markmoran3,

The additional information is helpful. In order to connect you with other members who have this problem, would you share the symptoms you are experiencing? I'm thinking of symptoms like swallowing problems and problems with digestion (either diarrhea or constipation or a feeling of fullness)?

I'm sorry to hear that you are having these stressful symptoms. Do you exercise to help relieve the stress? Has your doctor given you suggestions, regarding diet, alcohol use, etc.?

@markmoran3 - Can you please describe the kind of tests you had done? Were they repeats of same test or 10 different tests?

Normal lower esophical sphincter with aperstalisis of the esophagus.
I read that acid reflex control may help this?

Hi Mark,
I moved your latest question to the original discussion you started. Did you see @astaingegerdm’s question to you about what tests you’ve had?

@lillian32 and @fourof5zs and others have also shared about aperistalsis in this related discussion:
- Aperistalsis: anyone else been diagnosed with this? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/aperistalsis/

You mention that controlling acid reflux may help. Do you have acid reflux?
