Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) after knee replacement

Posted by captjamesh @captjamesh, Oct 21, 2020

So after hitting a wall at 93 Degrees my doctor and I said a MUA was in my best interest. They did all the pre op work just like they did for my surgery and even did the procedure in the OR. After waking up something was different I had no pain! My doctor said that he felt the resistance at 95 degrees and that it got worse until 105 degrees. Once he got to 114 it completely freed up and he went straight to 135 degrees. So I went home and didn’t have to take any meds at all because it just didn’t hurt. Oh I forgot to mention earlier that most of my pain was from the tendon on the outside of my knee being inflamed by rubbing the implant. He gave me a steroid shot for that. Today I had PT and after warming up we measured my ROM and it was 120!!!!! Still haven’t even taken any meds! We shall see how it goes over the next few days but if it feels like this I am golden! Finally! Wish I did this a month ago

T y for link but it keeps closing me out saying error. I can't find anyone that does it here. Dr seen me Monday said my room is now 90 not 105 by looking at my knee and I can barley raise my leg. He will not even do an x Ray when I ask , like it is his money. My knee now is hurting and very stiff. I am in the cpm at least 6 hrs a day and doing prescribed exercises. Suppose to have mua this Friday 17 June. Dreading it. I take care of my husband so this has all been a nightmare. And 14 days in a row of thearpy after the mua. I admire you guys that can do this but I am sorry I ever did. I could have been the exercise queen after surgery and always moving and to end of like this, well very depressing. And the Dr barely spoke to me. Please do lots oof research before you consider a tkr. Starting my 3 week I had a blood clot. I am on Eliquis now. A lot to handle. If I didn't know God I truly believe I would have had a nervous break down. Thank you for letting me share.

I hear your frustration …. By the way I do regret getting my knee done I was in less pain before…. So I can relate so many ways …. The only thing I can say if you are going for mua on Friday start looking at the positive…. It is very possible you can get your full range after mua ….. you will be able to get around…. Make sure you ice a lot will help with the swelling also you can use rolling pin to help …..it is good to vent….it very frustrating when things don’t go like they are supposed to …..So my thoughts with you to all going great …..

I found no one that does more near me. I had much, it was awful. Very quick. Woke up screaming in excruciating pain. I as for a shot of morphine, nurse brought me a percocet. I thought pain would never ease off. Then sent me to p t. Almost passed out. I went in rom105. Pt said it was 100 afterwards. I cannot walk without the walker. It's been over a week now. I am scared. Dr was to get home heath out here for pt because I couldn't get to thearpy, was doing pt 2x a day at home. It took Dr almost a week to send someone. It's been a nightmare. Home Health has me doing 2 exercises and icing every hour due to so much inflammation. They stopped cpm for now. My rom was 83 when home health measured. All I was doing before has now stopped. The pool, walking the best I could not using anything, pt. Doing around my home. I am not to be up on my feet except when I have to. Very hard when I am my husband's caretaker. I have made a big mistake. Is home health doing the right thing? I don't know? I can't help but fear another blood clot by not moving around much. I have been very confused and not quiet 5 months out from tkr.

Sorry to hear your not doing well ….I had mua at 6 weeks ….I remember it was painful and swollen….. at that time I did not do mfr it definitely would have helped…. Were you able to find someone in your area that does myofascial release ….would be very helpful…. The pain is going to get better just do what you can …. I had ice machine that helped with swelling….when I was away for my daughter wedding I used a ziplock bag filled it with ice wrapped it in cotton towel it stayed cold all night but I made sure I put another layer under the ice towel ….this helped me with swelling when I did not have my ice machine…..but rest very helpful also….I hear your frustration about not being able to care for your husband is there any help in your area … like home health they can have aids come and help until you can do for yourself…. I know they don’t do everything but I have a friend who has aid come for 3 hours four times a week very helpful….. just a thought so you don’t feel so overwhelmed during recovery…I hope you start having better days

Thank you, such kind words. My husband is being very hard to deal with right now. He has VA help that would come 3 days a week 4 hours a day and he says no. I have poa but I have a hard time feeling I am forcing him. No one told me you had to go thru all this after a mua. I was told I would walk out. Wrong. I have been lied to from the start. I found a therapist that does mfr in Newnan but I don't even know how to get there. Right now with my non walking skill it would be hard. I feel stuck.
