Fractured spine

Posted by candy101 @candy101, Jun 8, 2022

Have you heard of Crystalline Glucosamine sulfur? I have a fractured vertebrae. Doctor said it’s too old to heal. One year. Besides physical therapy, she suggested taking this particular type of glucosamine. I can only find information on it from one maker Dona.

I’m not on any medication regarding my back I found otc meds did nothing. I’m on medication for epilepsy, This doctor said I should take Dona glucosamine sulfate. That this brand was supposed to be so much better. I can’t really see how that would be helpful though.

I meant are you on any medications for osteoporosis? Was your break considered traumatic or osteoporotic? Do you know your DEXA scores?

Just saw this. I would ask to have Forteo, Tymlos or Evenity since you have a fracture. These meds grow bone and some studies show they work best if taken first, then followed by Reclast. I don't know your DEXA bone density scores. You can do one year of one of these meds and then Reclast or you can two years, depending on how bad your bones are and what monitoring shows.

I chose Tymlos because the pen has 8 clicks so I could start with two and move up. I have been on for 7 months now. It gives me hope!

I have had aDEXA Scan done but I don’t know my score. I’ll have to look and see if I can find it. My break is considered traumatic. I fell down eight stairs and landed on a tile floor. So I am scheduled to have reclast done. Hopefully that will turn out to be good

Yes it was nasty. At least I didn’t realize I was falling until I landed so I wasn’t tensed up. The good part was…… If you could call anything about a fall a good part… I was carryng two pillows Stuffed with sheets which I know cushioned my fall to some extent. But then again if I hadn’t been carrying those darn pillows I would’ve seen the stairs. 🤪 (I was a caregiver at somebody’s house)

@candy101 Welcome to Connect. I think the name of the supplement is glucosamine sulfate, and there are lots of manufacturers. I'm curious about your fracture. Is it one of the spines on a vertebrae that is fractured and separated? That seems a bit odd that your doctor doesn't seem too concerned. If this is a compression fracture, sometimes they glue those back together with bone cement.

What advice has your doctor given you about why the fracture did not heal?

I had complete relief from the long time pain from a compression fracture at T12. Mayo doctors performed a vertebrplasty in March and after about 2 weeks, the pain was gone. Local doctors seemed oblivious as to the cause even though comparative MRI's showed progression.

I’m so glad that you don’t have any more pain. That’s really wonderful!
How long after the fracture did you have the procedure? I had read that if the fracture was more than a year old that the treatment wouldn’t work.

I am also doing Reclast. I had my first infusion in February. We chose this because my Oncologist said is has grown back bone in cancer patients. I cannot take anything that stimulates estrogen (which of course helps bone growth) because my cancer feeds on estrogen. I am currently cancer free for a year :). I won’t get DEXA results until December but I am visualizing those bones getting heavier.
