Anxiety and GERD (acid reflux): What do you do that helps?

I’ve had acid reflux for years. Also on medication for it for years. I wasn’t diagnosed with anxiety until way after the reflux. I was on Celexa for years but I took myself off of it back in early 2020. My psychiatrist stopped seeing patients. Now he’s back and I’ve been seeing him again for about a year. I suppose I must of gradually weaned myself off of celexa because at the time I didn’t have any problems. He’s tried several different meds for anxiety but I’m very sensitive. I get side effects very easily and can’t tolerate them. Even tried going back on Celexa. Couldn’t do it unless dosage was too high. Tried Pristiq and it wasn’t good. Pure hell to wean off of that. I was on low dose 50mg a day for 5-6 weeks. Wasn’t feeling right. He had me wean off of it in 13 days. Then put me on propranolol (beta blocker) for anxiety. Since being on all different meds, especially Pristiq sometimes I lose my train of thought. He has me on Nexium twice a day for awhile for the reflux. In the past I would only take it twice a day if reflux acted up. Read beta blockers can give heartburn and weaken the splinter to your stomach. In turn cause reflux problems. Has anyone with anxiety and reflux experience any of this? If so, what did you do? Thank you.

I saved my parent's old cookbooks & by & large their one's on European cooking just furnish pate recipes. However Julia Child's Kitchen (by Julia Child) provides some background. She says "Pate comes from pastry, because originally it was meat baked in a pastry crust: it has now come to mean the meat mixture itself". From looking online pates have come to include vegetarian, & fish mixtures too. I believe these mixtures can be very much adapted to ones dietary and food consistency needs. Very artful presentations can even be made serving them. Julia Child says "if you can make a meat loaf you can make a pate".

I use a supplement that has aloe and slippery elm on an empty stomach twice a day it seems to help me also drink a little ginger water with apple cider vinegar before lunch stopped drinking caffeinated drinks which is very hard because I love coffee also when I know I’m going to have a bigger meal I use Swedish butters prior to help me digest this is what has help me it’s not for everyone

I am going to check out the Mayo patient support re GERD. Thanks for the tip. Everything I am writing is totally anecdotal. I am doing everything I can to avoid surgery for hiatal hernia reduction. Before I eat anything solid I try to drink a liter of water soon after I wake up in the morning. It seems like I feel better being well hydrated before I eat something more filling. I "listen to my body". If I feel nauseated I either quit or slow down the intake. I generally feel better if I have a bowel movement and feel it helps gas reduction. Generally bowels move within an hour or two after I hydrate myself early in the morning. I do other things with diet, chamomile/valerian tea etc if anyone is interested. Horrible anxieties occur if I wake up unexpectedly choking and have acid running through my nose and sinuses. If I am thirsty I drink water except in the evening.

Stay away from apple cider vinegar, it’s equivalent to pouring acid down your throat awakening pepsin. It will burn your esophagus.

Has anyone experienced taking those meds and having additional anxiety and depression? I read they can do that to a person. I’ve been on Nexium for years and it seemed it stopped working. Dr put me on Protonix. Seemed my anxiety increased. Went back on Nexium. There have been reports not to be on those meds for a long time but people are. Of course side effects from being on them for a long time. Thank you.

I believe I asked this question not too long ago. I’ve been on Nexium for years 40 mg a day. Once in awhile I would take it twice a day if my acid reflux would act up. Per my primary dr. Then my psychiatrist told me to always take it twice a day. Anxiety produces more acid reflux. A surgeon switched it to Protonix twice a day. It helped but I believe it gave me more anxiety and depression. My husband and I looked up side effects and it can give you anxiety and depression. Read PPIs tend to do that. Also long term use isn’t good either. Does anyone experience those side effects or have comments. Thank you.

My only side effect of PPI's is severe leg cramps at night. I walk 2 miles a day for exercise which they say gets rid of stress. I also eat a strict low acid diet due to Barrett's esophagus. I take 1 40 mg of Pantaprazole 1/2 hr. before supper. Anxiety causes all kinds of problems.

I took every PPI they make , not long term but just to see if it would help , took Protonix and Delxiant ( spelling )?? I have chronic Gastritis, class b GERD , Esophagitis, small hiatal hernia, diverticulosis, IBS-D , small flat polyps on stomach lining. Been to 6 Gastros had over 20 tests in 9 years. Recently Mayo Clinic Jacksonville 3 more tests . I’ve not been on a PPI in 2 years. Unfortunately even though I’ve tried everything holistic, diet eliminations , tested for food allergies ( which I didn’t have ). I got rid of all milk 9 years ago . Low sugar , low dairy , no caffeine, little red meat . I’m still so sick every single day of my life .
I sometimes take .50 mg of Klonipin ( or you can try low dose of Xanax ) for anxiety from all of this .
I live on Ultra Pepto daily and that’s it . No one and nothing can help my symptoms. I pray you get the answers you need . 🙏🙏

I was on Protonix also, 40 mg., and had severe leg cramps at night. Co-q-10 relieved them for months and months.

flow65, Nexium, Protonix and similar products are anti thiamine factors in addition to others listed in the stuttersence link. The negative effect these have on thiamine impacts the brain, vagus nerve and gut. In addition, these proton pump inhibitors lower mineral absorption such as magnesium which is needed to activate thiamine and vitamin D. The vagus nerve connects the gut to the brain and it also connects to the lower esophageal sphincter. Low activated thiamine causes abnormal activity of the vagus nerve. In the brain low thiamine can result in depression, anxiety, cognitive memory loss, PTSD and others.
