Pain control with Lewy body dementia

Posted by anthonyvw1940 @anthonyvw1940, May 18, 2022

My LO has Lewy Body Dementia, had a seizure and now has a Compression Fracture in his spine. Looking for medications for pain control that are safe for people with LBD.

Hello @anthonyvw1940 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm so sorry about your LO. I was able to find some information that may be helpful below.

"If possible, avoid medications with anticholinergic properties, which can worsen cognition, or dopamine agonists, which can cause hallucinations. First-generation antipsychotic medications, such as haloperidol (Haldol), should not be used to treat Lewy body dementia."

- LBD Video Series: Todd Graham, LBDA: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/dementia-hub/newsfeed-post/lewy-body-dementia-a-video-series-todd-graham/

Can I ask what you've been giving your LO to help with the pain and/or what was initially recommended by your neurologist?

We are being challenged getting the treatment we need and getting an MRI done. He continues to live with a great deal of pain. We are currently rotating extra strength Tylenol, 650 Mg Tylenol and Aleve. We started him on Tramadol once a day yesterday.
