GI Disorder and Internal Shaking

Posted by gigiraj @gigiraj, Feb 15, 2019

Hi all. I'm a 21 year old South Asian female and I have been having GI issues for about five years--mainly along the lines of constipation. I do have bowel movements every day but it takes a long time & I am rarely fully cleared out. These GI issues are always accompanied by other health issues (gas, pressure in head, etc). Recently, some scary new conditions have manifested: In the past few weeks, there have been times where my heart starts beating wildly and very fast. Sometimes, when I'm tired and constipated, my entire body feels like its vibrating internally; the shakes aren't visible but it feels like all my muscles are quivering. At this point, I feel a constant shaking/quivering within my body, especially in my heart cavity.

I have had TWO EKG's and both came back normal. All lab tests for diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, etc came back within normal limits. I am very concerned about this internal shaking. My dad says he found something about how GI disorders can impact muscoskeletal system and since the heart is a muscle, it's contracting and being affected. But I wanted to know if anyone here can help!!!!!!! If anyone knows anything at all please please please let me know!!!!!

I’m so sorry you are going thru this too. I also have IBS-D . Recently I’ve been taking Metamucil crackers. It seems to be helping me. I’m also on a anti spasmodic drug to help with the internal tremors form the last 2 weeks. I’m still having the tremors all day and night. I had my gallbladder remove 20 yrs ago. Reading your article sounds like what i go thru.

Which antispasmodic drug? Is it working?

I experienced internal shaking. I could never determine a correlation to any event like eating or anything else. The worse times were when I was pregnant and attended outdoor baseball games, my babies would shake inside of me as if they were terribly cold. I recently had an Electrophoresis and found that I have a Persistence of Fetal Heme. This makes me wonder if having less oxygen in my blood has anything to do with it. I have tried to donate blood on several occassions and was always told at 10.5 heme that I don't have enough to share. I was recently hospitalized and a brilliant doctor checked my magnesium levels. I'm 65 and to my knowlege no one has ever checked my Mg. It was found to be depleted. I was given a shot which felt like stars of energy going throughout my body and felt immediately better! Apparently, it's an iron and is not usually tested for, even though it's next to potassium, salt and calcium on the chart of elements. Perhaps it's essential because ever since having this shot, I have not experienced a tachycardia which I had experienced nightly for years or internal shaking or what I described as "burning blood." Electrophoresis costs $3-$60 and only takes a couple of days. I believe more people should have this to see if they also have heme that is different. Mine has a Gamma Globulin. I have noticed that Mosquitos don't bite me. Maybe they don't like my heme.
I also feel more energized in high elevations. Maybe this heme is good for that.

Did they check your RBC Magnesium or regular magnesium?

Hi @crayola1 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Glad you decided to join the group! You will see that I moved your post to a long standing discussion about GI disorders with internal shaking. There are lots of members talking about this and I think you would really benefit from reading their posts.
Have you consulted with a physician regarding this yet?

Hi Amanda, Sorry for the delay in response. I just found my post. I didn't realize I had to sign in to see if I got a reply. I have been to several doctors. I have had a scope which showed gastritis so I am taking Nexium and Linzess for constipation. I am doing a Sibo test tomorrow. I did a home a sleep study which showed my airway shut down when I woke up shaking so now Ill do an in lab one. But that wouldn't explain the shaking I have during the day like before and after I have to go to the bathroom or sometimes with different movements or positions. My Primary Care doctor has no idea. My neurologist isnt sure but is paying attention. The GI Nurse Practitioner gave me Levsin which I tried once but didn't seem to help. Ill try it again. So far my Heart tests are fine. I would like to do a longer holter but may just try a beta blocker because its so uncomfortable when it happens that I just want a solution. Any suggestions you have for doctors or tests to ask about or treatments I can ask my doctor about I appreciate. Thanks

Hi! I’m on dicyclomine 2x a day. I take it in the am and right before i go to bed. It’s helping me because it stops the spasms in my gut. I just started B12 shots. My B12 was very low. I’ve noticed a big difference in my internal tremors. I’m getting the shot weekly. I also started a special magnesium supplement. Hope this helps.

Teresa, the answer is YES. I not only had shakiness, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, brain fog and other stuff. MC effected my nervous system, my brain, and my heart. The electrical part of the heart. I learned a lot from a great DR. FINE, researcher in the field of irritable bowels problems. He called me and I could barely think straight. My heart was bothering me and I had the full-throttle Cardiac scare. Had tests in the hospital overnight and my heart is fine. It stems from the Gut. I am a RN, but I really did not know what was wrong with me. I was wearing diapers and feeling sick. I wasted a lot of money on doctors who didn't have a clue. When it's your Gut, GI specialists are beyond bad. That's my two cents worth.

My wife is suffering similarly to you. She has been to several doctors and various specialists. Would like to try to get a referral to your Dr. Fine. Could you provide Dr. Fine's contact information?
Would you be referring to Dr. Steven Fine, who is the founding physician of Greater Boston Gastroenterology?
Thanks in advance.

I have Microscopic Coltis, MC. When it comes on, I get shaky, trembling, confusion, and forgetfulness. This disease effects the brain in a big way. Think about all the muscles and nerves you have in your Gut. Takes lots of muscle and nerves to digest food. When things get crazy with diarrhea and constipation, my system goes haywire. I think it also effected my heart. I can tell my body becomes a shaky steam engine. MC is an autoimmune disease that was part of my father's demise.

Thank you so much for this post!!! I have never heard of Microscopic Colitis. I will research it. I have very similar symptoms. Memory issues, difficulty understanding things even basic things, trouble learning new things, chronic constipation (literally bm once a month), headaches, tremors, insomnia, etc. I knew neurological issues could cause gut issues but I never thought of it in reverse. Gut causing brain issues because of nerves. If you still have the symptoms, I suggest going to a holistic doctor that treats the thyroid. Primary drs and endocrinologists do not know the correct amount of thyroid hormones we need. Often those levels described as nomal are not optimal. Also get reverse t3 tested. Our bodies make the main thyroid hormone we need called t3. Our body converts t4 to t3. Often, our body has a conversion issue and makes too much reverse t3 in this process. Reverse t3 blocks t3 from entering our cells. This is why you can have a normal amount of t3 in blood but still have symptoms. I have this diagnosis. Cytomel is a med that helps a lot with my symptoms but I know I have a combination of issues. Btw may I ask how old you are? I am 20 and need more ppl my age to relate to that have this.

"I have bowel issues, my legs/arms can sometimes feel heavy/odd, and sometimes I have pain [more like soreness] in my lower back/hips when I've eaten but am constipated." You literally have the exact same problems I'm struggling with that no one can find an explanation for. About 2 years ago I had troubles with gagging all the time and they diagnosed a small hiatal hernia, for that I took PPIs then about a year ago in May 2019 I noticed a sudden change in stool it took on every form or colour imaginable and I had a lot of pain in my epigastric area. I did multiple blood tests which only showed elevated levels of bilirubin but still within non dangerous levels. I did CT scan of abdomen and thorax which were both normal. But yea for a year now I am super fatigued all the time, my legs and upper arms can feel really strange (like a mix of crawling, heaviness, weakness, creepy) and I also feel weird/sore around my kidneys in the back but I can also feel it on 2 points from the front of my body (where my kidneys would be located).

I do not think Restless legs was the correct diagnosis unfortunately. Your case seems so similar to mine and I believe it is something in the gut. Just yesterday by chance I discovered that after oversaturating myself with vitamin C, which leads to watery diarrhea made me feel temporarily a lot better. I'm theorizing that there could be a bacteria or fungus in my gut that releases toxins that produce these symptoms in me. And the watery diarrhea acted as a kind of gut cleanse for a few hours which washed away the toxins for a period of a few hours.

You could try the experiment yourself if you have symptoms, if you experience the same relief it could point us both in the right direction. I drank half a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of ascorbic soda every half hour until I have to rush to the toilet (Your guts will rumble a lot). It usually takes like 4 glasses and you'll end up an hour on the toilet.

Thank you so much for the Vitamin C suggestion!! I have very similar symptoms with no answer. I used to have horrible acid reflux and GI put me on PPIs too. 2 years ago I found out acid reflux is actually usually caused by low acid. That lead me to research causes of low acid. Thyroid is one of the main things that causes acid reflux, constipation, brain fog, etc. You can have thyroid issues even when thyroid blood tests are "normal". The amount of thyroid hormones that regular drs say we need is usually not enough. You have to go to a holistic dr. Also get reverse t3 tested. Not all holistic drs do it you have to specify and ask.

I had my vitamin levels tested at a health food store. My vitamin C was low. I looked up vitamin C deficiency and toxicity symptoms. I read that too much vitamin C causes diarrhea. Since then I wanted to overdose on vitamin C but wasnt sure how.

Are you still experiencing symptoms?

Also you mentioned toxins. Heavy metal toxicity causes chronic constipation, brain fog, acid reflux, hormone imbalance, thyroid issues, etc. It is hard to find a dr who treats it. Blood tests do not accurately reflect how much metals are in your body. Urine tests are more accurate and bone tests are most accurate. Unfortunately, holistic drs that do urine tests and clinics that do bone tests do not accept insurance. I cannot afford to see them. However, sometimes regular primary drs will do a metal urine test.

Hi,
i just saw these posts. And i thought if i answer, it might help someone. I have SIBO and Leaky gut syndrome. And i had internat tremors and other horrible symptoms. The only thing that helped me was a diet with no gluten, no lactose, no sugar. Most of the time only vegetables and fruits. That was when my symptoms got less and less over time. I hope you got better since then though. Because of the leaky gut i had a sensitivity for gluten, lactose and sugar. That‘s why, after i ate these things, in the night i was getting those weird tremors. I also had tinnitus and brain fog, i felt anxiety and my muscles feld very stiff. The most horror thing was the asthma at night , i couln’d sleep because i wasn’t able to breath. I took some medication for asthma, but none made it go away. I tried everything, i went to a lot of doctors and no one could help me. Besides i am a doctor myself and i didn’t know what’s going on with me. I am really happy that i feel better now.

Hi, have the symptoms returned at all? Im curious if the tinnitus went away. I have all of the same issues.

Hi! I’ve commented before on internal tremors. I’m still having them really bad. My internal tremors are now going all day and night. Can’t even sleep at night. Has anyone tried something to get rid of the tremors or at least get some relief? My B12 is low and I do get B12 shots weekly. I asked my rheumatologist about them and she said it was anxiety and to get some sleep! Omg really?????
