I had a unilateral mastectomy about a month ago and I suggest to have plenty pillows around to prop her arms on. I did recline with drains in place. Have her do all the exercises they suggest. This helps with soreness, drainage and swelling. Good luck to her and you. I hope this helps. How long ago did you have your surgery, if I may ask? Did you keep the recliner or did you rent one?

I didn't even know they made electric recliners. Heck, I want one for 'all the time'....ha ha. It would be a great help post mastectomy. It's very hard to move around just after and you want to rest your chest wall as much as possible at first. I propped myself up with lots of pillows but I do think a recliner would be a great help. The drains are generally only in a couple of weeks to a month (perhaps) and the pain is really quite manageable for most people. I found the process to be easier than I expected. I shopped all over our little town to try out electric recliners. Found the perfect one on sale. I had a double Mastectomy and 14 lymph nodes removed on August 29th. This chair made my life so much easier! I slept in it for almost 4 weeks. Plus it is a terrific chair to read in now that I am feeling so FINE. The salesman remarked that re-sell would be a breeze. @cindylb I've been in my LaZBoy recliner for over a year and a half now as still having problems sleeping in a bed. It is electric. It is a well stuffed chair. I also suffer weakness and fatigue from my aromatase inhibitors and will go back and forth from activities around house and garden and need to rest inbetween. I find that being able to tip back a bit is quite helpful.

Hello @wileypack and again welcome to this site! The information you have received from other members is excellent, I encourage you to continue to follow us on Connect and ask any questions you wish. I would like to add my experience below.

I found that even the so-called "bargain" furniture stores, carry electric reclines, and at very affordable prices! In my experience, it's a toss between getting something that does everything, or most, of what you want, and spending a lot more for something that may do more, may last longer, but you don't really need. Personally, I prefer spending less for a similar benefit AND if it doesn't last 10+ years it's OK. After 5 or more years I may want a different or better chair and sell, or donate the old one! I looked and looked and ended up buying one that has everything I wanted and more (even has 2 USB ports to charge your cell phones and lights to use for ambiance or to read). Mine comes from a "bargain" furniture store and is a "love seat" with a console in the middle, drink holders, large spaces for storing items, etc. I bought it 2 years ago and is THE perfect thing for us. I paid $550. But this is for "two" electric recliners (love seat). I have used mine A LOT after the surgeries (19 and 21 Nov 2019) ... I take great naps on it, and it is in fabulous conditions after 2 years!

I would also like to mention one item I have used since the surgery (and am still using). I would call it the BEST thing I could possibly have found, and truly indispensable for the first 3 weeks or so. Honestly, I only bought it so I could use it in the car, immediately after the surgery! And it does work incredibly well in the car for sure, BUT its BEST USE is in bed (and later on a recliner, sofa, etc.). I HIGHLY recommend it! This pillow is constructed in such a way, it held my body in the best possible position and I was able to relax, cradled by my pillow, in spite of my two drains. The pillow kept everything in the correct spot. This is unquestionably THE BEST thing I did for myself! And at only $39, it was also a wonderful bargain! I bought the one you see in the photo on the Amazon page (Tiny Flower).
