Tips on What To Do while at Mayo Clinic Rochester

Posted by savinggrace16 @savinggrace16, May 24, 2021

I'll be visiting Mayo in Rochester for the first time this week, and am wondering what tips folks have when visiting the campus. I've got the app downloaded and know when & where all my appointments are. Would be helpful to know of places to eat on or around the Mayo campus, as well as places to visit on or close to campus during the downtime I have between appointments. Any other general tips for visiting Mayo are welcome! Thanks! 😊

You will be amazed at what there is to do. I live about 100 miles away and have been there several times. Covid has changed some things but I recommend finding out what tours are available throughout the clinic, taking the narrated trolley around the town, listening to the carillon, walking and shopping in the subways and check out the great medical information center in the subway and the classes offered. If you are driving and have time, don't forget to look into the marvelous town along the Mississippi River especially the eagle center in Wabasha.

FYI - Wabasha is great place to visit within hour of Rochester, but Eagle Center has been remodeling and has limited hours and requires reservation for the Eagle program on weekends. But you can see Eagles flying over Mississippi anywhere along the river.

@loribmt thanks so much for the response! So far, I'm only scheduled for two days in Rochester, but I am sure I will know more about what my schedule looks like after my evaluation with the cardiologist tomorrow. I'm so nervous, but am glad to be at a place that will give me the best chance at figuring out what is going on! I'll pop back on this thread to let you know how it goes!

Good morning, @savinggrace16 My goodness, it’s been almost a year since we had this chat about visiting Mayo-Rochester! I hope that all went smoothly for you. Rochester and the clinic are really easy to navigate once you’re there. It’s quite an experience though, isn’t it?
I thought I’d pop in to see how everything is going and what you found out from your visit with the doctors.

Were you able to get a diagnosis and treatment?

So much to see and do while in Rochester! Love Chester’s restaurant. So much on the menu to choose from, I have never gotten anything that wasn’t great. I really like their Walleye tacos. Must also try Carrol’s Corn in the subway. The very best popcorn around. Friends and family always ask us to bring some home.
And be sure to venture out to Flapdoodles. Wonderful homemade ice cream. Ice cream always helps everything! Safe travels.

I am FINALLY getting an appointment with the Mayo for my "Crohn's" disease. I have been to many doctors here in the Dallas area and no one is able to help. So, I thought, why not see the "best"? Ironically, the doctor I am seeing in May did his residency at the hospital (Royal Oak MI) I was born in 65 years ago!! Coincidence?

I was told that I have to be in the Rochester area for 5 business days so they can run tests. Kinda a long time to just hang out. I do have family in Minneapolis and northern MN. Any suggestions on just hangin in Rochester?

May in Rochester can be wonderful, though compared to Dallas, can be cold.

I highly recommend the Mayo Clinic Rochester. I was there 4 years ago for five days and had tests and saw several specialist. I stayed with a friend ( my advocate) and in our down time we shopped at the many shops in the tunnel, ate wonderful food and actually had a good time. It takes the group of doctors time to have all of the test results and to meet and discuss their findings and recommendations. I actually had to go back for a procedure a couple of weeks later for a week. I am so thankful I went and they continued to follow up with me.

I just finished my first week do testing at Mayo in Rochester. I was a little anxious about not knowing what to expect, but it’s like a well run machine there. Had a bunch of different labs, scans, and procedures. Now just waiting for all the results and next steps from the doctors there once results are in. I stayed at a hotel downtown during the week and stayed with my family in the twin cities over the weekend. With GI I’d recommend staying in Rochester because it’s nice to relax when your already timing things with fasting and procedure prep. Good luck!
