Electrical shocks throughout my body.
Hello. I’m not sure if anyone knows what I am talking about but I am hoping that someone does because I am beginning to feel crazy. Every day, I have an electrical sensation feeling throughout my entire body. The only way I can describe it to people is that it feels like I am being shocked by a light switch throughout my entire body. It is very painful, however only lasts from around 5-20 minutes, 1-5 times a day. It’s starting to scare me because my doctor looked at me like I was crazy, and my nurses chuckled when they heard my symptoms. I am going to a neurologist but they cannot fit me in for another month. It’s very painful for me and it has started to come with a red, splotchy rash from my neck down to my legs. If anyone has any idea what this could be and what I can do to surprise the pain, I would really appreciate the advice. And also if anyone else deals with this please tell me because I really am starting to think I am crazy. Thank you!

@johnbishop Hi, John. Yes, I have been studying this stuff and comparing it to my own symptoms. This set of readings and others describe my symptoms and signs very well. I am not completely sold on the MS references, although three different genetic sequencing pieces list MS as part of my package, along with Gelsolin, LGMD2m, encephalopathy, demyelating (Sp?) nerve trouble, ankylosing spondylitis, leukemias, inflammations and lots of other nerve damaging issues. I have had spine, cardiac, vascular and muscle surgery and therapy frequently over the past 80 years or so, along with cardiac stuff. so I suspect all this is tied together. But no one had ever tied this name, Lhermitte's Sign, into this package until I stumbled into it by searching. Thanks again, John. Old Karl
My wife has the same shocks in her body when sleeping , doctors have been no help, recently we stumbled on GABA suplement that WORKS !! Finally she is able to sleep the whole night again. Try GABA Relaxer by Country Life it works for her. Somehow it slows down the brain and nervous system for a while when sleeping. Blocks activity I guess All we know is she can sleep once more.
@supporthusband I had electric shocks down my entire body if I bent my neck. That is Lhermitte's sign. The reason that was happening to me was because of spinal cord compression from a collapsed disc and bone spurs that were pushing into my spinal cord. I had spine surgery that fixed this and decompressed the spinal cord. If your wife has not ruled out a possible spine problem, it may be worth it for her to see a neurologist or spine specialist. This kind of problem can sneak up on you from an older injury and may not be causing pain, but can cause permanent damage and can put a person at risk of paralysis. Problems like this are best addressed before permanent damage happens.
Shocks are usually nerve pain from compression somewhere. A neurologist can do testing to figure out where that may be happening. It could be in the body in peripheral nerves or in the spine and could create similar symptoms. I'm glad your wife has found something that helps her sleep, although it sounds like no one has figured out the source of the problem. Would she consider an appointment with a neurologist?
Been there done that with all the wires and recorder for 4 days they found nothing other than it isn't seizures. Neurologist was most disapointing of all for her after waiting 4 months to get to see one. No suggestions other than it may be chemical. MRI s visits no help. GABA thank you for this miracle medicine which we found searching on the net. Couldn't get that suggestion from the neurologist ??? What a waste
I'm glad she has found relief because I relate to her misery. My issues were completely tied to my diet- processed sugar which elevated the yeast in my body. I never had any testing as to this issue, but because I have eczema many suggest dietary changes. The yeast which live in our intestines, discharge waste though "leaky gut" issues that come with age. I had several complete neurological work ups, nothing was found. I never had external yeast issues. It took about 6 weeks giving up all sugar, processed and natural to realize this diet was making a difference. After 2 months the sensations stopped. Now 4 years later and no processed sugar and limited natural sugar I have zero issues, so no need for me to try the GABA. If the GABA stops helping her , she should consider a sugar detox to starve out the yeast. Also read The Yeast Connection Handbook by William Crooke, Md. Yeast is tied to many autoimmune diseases.
Thank you for the info, I have ordered the book you mentioned. She has cut back on sugar as we found that had increased the shocking to even daytime occurances. A lot going on here, a lot to learn, doctors don't seem to believe or care about the problem. Prescribe Xanax to the patient , Next.
Thank You
Don't give up hope. I have shared before that I would lay in my sleepless bed, getting randomly shocked every few seconds and I would analyse the best way to commit suicide. I couldn't live with this pain much longer. I needed to sleep. I only hung on because I loved my husband and knew he needed the "former" me. I also had the symptoms during the day, but they were not as dramatic and if I could distract myself with a project or television and get my mind off my misery it was helpful. I became obsessed searching the web and blogging with others trying to understand what was happening and what else to try. Histamines levels are higher at night plus no distractions while laying in bed.
Has she had the 5 Day Extended Patch Test? A trigger which began my issues was no doubt the memory foam mattress I switched to before I started having issues. This 5 Day test identified my contact allergens ( I have over a dozen which I now know the names of) one being an element in rubber which is used to process memory foam, yet polyurethane foam is made without it. I had so much to learn. Chemicals off gas and transfer though our skin and if allergic raise our histamine levels. This was seeping into me laying in bed. My clothes, bedding, cosmetics, metals, cleaning products, even my shoes and more were making me sick. MInd you, I was fine until middle age, no issues.
Steroids and Xanax are prescriptions which doctors prescribe out of desperation, they are trying to offer relief because they can't find a cause. I don't think that they don't care, it's they just don't have any answers. Yes they gave me Xanax thinking I was a hyper person, awful drug, it turned me into a zombie, I felt flat-lined. I only took it about 3 days, internal skin issues were no better.
As much as I hate steroids, to keep from losing her mind she should consider a Kenalog 40 corticosteroid injection. This would calm, eliminate my internal symptoms' for 9-10 months. My side effect was hair loss being about 2 months after the injection and hair regrowing after about 6 months. Also facial blushing lasted for months after the injection. This vicious cycle played on but kept me sane for 4 years until I began my anti-inflammation diet. If I had only tried it sooner.
I so hope she gets this invisible disease figured out. In summary get help identifying the cause- get to a good allergist or dermatologist licensed for the 5 Day Extended Patch Test, the True Test Kit is a common brand. Not all derms or allergist are licensed with the testing companies. Yet even after learning her allergen inflammation and the stinging still exists, begin an anti-inflammation diet, if that doesn't help after 6 weeks start up with steroid injections to temporarily calm the internal inflammation which she doesn't know the cause of. Don't get the test or the shots before patch testing because the reading wouldn't be accurate.
I so hope she gets to live pain free.
No 5 day test but she did get some allergie test done a few years ago when this started. Still searching for the root cause but the GABA has allowed her some catch up sleep she despertately needs. Thank you for your help.
So is it cause of the meds changing cause I'm having electric shock all over my body and I take Zoloft 50mg
Brain zaps/electric shock sensations are common when withdrawing from an SSRI. A very slow taper can help. Some people use Prozac to transition off of a faster acting SSRI because the longer half life eases the withdrawal process.
If meds change maybe there is withdrawal from the first drug before the new one kicks in-?????
