Ear Tinnitus and Pain with Neuropathy

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Jan 29, 2019

Does anyone have severe tinnitus and ear pain with their neuropathy? I have small fiber and autonomic neuropathy and I have been getting severe tinnitus (roaring and high pitch noise) and a feeling of pressure and pain for the last month. I am wondering if the neuropathy and/or medications are causing it. I am on gabopentin, cymbalta, and NSAIDS.

My wife suffers greatly from idiopathic small fiber neuropathy as well as tinnitus. She takes gabapentin and some sleep medicine(Ambien), but most medications, even at micro doses causes horrible tinnitus(ringing, almost siren levels, in her ears). She is now extremely hesitant to take anything.
On top of this, she has a jaw tremor(her neurologist considers this hyper-excitability due to the ISFN), which is causing horrible jaw pain, which she can not take any medication for, due to the tinnitus.
She feels like she is the only one going through this. Any one else have anything remotely like this? And any suggestions?
Thank you. I am glad you are all here to run this by.

Ibuprofen is a non steroidal anti inflammatory NSA. Unfortunately they can cause serious tinnitus. I have had to discontinue their use because it made my tinnitus worse. The same goes for aspirin. Tylenol is preferred for me at any rate. Not as strong as ibuprofen though. Tylenol 1 or 2 contains codine, another no-no for us poor folks with the never ending noise of tinnitus. Amitripyline has also been flagged as a possible culprit but I find it’s ok for me. Have you tried cannabis for your headaches? You can get a prescription from your doctor for it that doesn’t include the recreational drug effect.

I have severe neuropathy in feet, ankles and now legs. I also have had tinnitus very loudly for 2 years since the virus. Nothing seems to help.

That "sounds" like me! But I never made a connection of tinnitus, neuropathy, and hearing loss together.. Looks like I'd better begin following this now..
I don't have a hearing aid yet, but do plan on getting that done soon.. We'll be moving across the country soon so I'll start that process after the move.

I am not a medical professional. I think a lot depends on the individual. Some people get tinnitus with noise levels or medications that won’t affect another person. My husband has been taking baby aspirin for years but does not have tinnitus. Don’t stop without talking to your Dr. Especially if you have cardiac problems.

I take Pregablin (Lyrica) without any worsening of my tinnitus. Not sure if it has a similar use to Gabapentin but it might be ok for you.
