I knew the sweetest nun with TMAU. The first time me and my kids met her she immediately explained it to them. She also gave them choices about how they could cope with the smell. She could light a candle ,open a window, etc. She made it about them . I've never met anyone else offer suggestions to others about how to deal with a disease they have the way she did. She said when she first noticed the odor and saw other people could smell it she was devestated. She went on to become a teacher and a nun. She was also the greatest advocate and educator. She still got depressed from time to time. She never quit!! The most amazing woman!!

Hi , I’m new here and have joined to find answers and support while offering the same back. I think I have Trimethylaminuria as well. It started at least 6 months ago.
While doing a lot of research I found limiting foods high in choline such as red meat, pork and sea fish helps in combating the odor. This is not a recommendation from me, its just what I personally tried and found helpful.
Theres lots of information online showing studies done on why this happens but few MDs actually know anything about it. Im trying to find a Dr who will test me for it, saw mine a few times and she knows nothing about it and suggested I seek out research clinics.
