Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?
I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

That's good to know. I have not even started that process to see how much my insurance will cover. It's like learning a whole new language. Thanks again. Renee
Hi I am Cindy and 64 years old, completely healthy. Dexascan showed -4 on Spine. Anabolics of Evenity, Forteo and Tymlos recommended. My choice. How do I decide? Where should I look for Reliable information??? Thanks
This is Cindy again. Where do I find the statistics that show the effectiveness of each drug??? I am OK with doing the self injections/the refrigeration. I just want the med that works the best and does not cause side effects. I am NOT a drug taker, so this makes me nervous.
Thanks so much!
Evenity seems to have fewer side effects but has a black box warning on cardiovascular risk. It is very new. Forteo's black box warning on bone cancer has been lifted; since 2002 no cases have resulted. Tymlos is older than Evenity and newer than Forteo and still has the bone cancer black box warning, but it is expected to be lifted after a certain amount of time because it works very similarly to Forteo.
Some people have side effects on any of these meds. As I wrote above, I chose Tymlos because you can start with a low dose and move up. With a bone density similar to yours and a few fractures, I am willing to endure some side effects. I am sensitive to meds in general and could not take Forteo. Tymlos initially caused headache and palpitations but switching to a low dose and to taking it in the morning helped me and now I just have occasional queasiness at 7/8 of a full dose.
Tymlos is very effective in the spine if that is where your low scores are. Tymlos and Forteo both grow bone; Evenity grows bone and also suppresses bone turnover. Talk to more than one doctor if you need to!
Regarding Traveling Tips, I am using Tymlos for 9 days now, and I see that once you have 'primed' your new pen it can be kept at room temp. I am planning a 3 week road trip this Summer, and I am wondering if anyone else has any Travel Tips about how to keep the pen at 'room temp' when traveling in a car 6-7 hours a day. I do have the 'pink' carry case given to me by my Doctor, & I see you should carry it with you in the car. Never placing pen in trunk or glove compartment, & never leaving it in a hot car when you leave the car. I will also give Tymlos a call to see what they advise. Thank you for all of your wonderful feedback everyone! Take care!
I wrap it in bubble wrap and a hand towel and put it in a plastic bag with a gel pack.
Good information! Thank you windyshores!
Hello! Regarding Forteo vs Tymlos. For myself, I tried to use Forteo a few years ago. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue Forteo injections after only 6 months due to ongoing daily vertigo that did not get better. I have been on Tymlos injections for 11 days. Once the pen is primed you don't have to refrigerate. In addition, Tymlos has the option to start off at a lower dose with fewer 'clicks', which allows your body to adjust to the medicine slowly. Then gradually you can move up to the full, daily dose of 80. Currently I am at 50, or '5' clicks per day. The only side effect for me has been that I get pretty tired the day after I increase my dosage, but this goes away within 24 hours. Good Luck to you!
I’m finishing up my two years on Forteo and haven’t had a single negative side effect. My numbers improved at the one-year bone scan and I anticipate my second one to show further improvement. Not sure yet what I’ll do after the two years are up; I have an appointment in a few months with the endocrinologist. The refrigeration issue hasn’t been an issue at all and Forteo is easy to travel with.
I used Forteo and also had a great experience!
