Anyone else have a Redundant / Tortuous Colon?

Posted by onaquest @onaquest, Nov 7, 2018

Hello. Anyone else out there that has a redundant/ tortured colon? I was diagnosed with this a few years ago. I’m usually ok, but if I get constipated, I get sick for a week or two. Last year my gastroenterologist referred me to a surgeon for urgent surgery to remove some of my colon. The surgeon I ended up seeing (not on the recommended list by my gastro doc due to others not available for a long time) said he believed I could live with the redundant colon if I followed a low FODMAP diet. I tried the diet religiously, scientifically (I’m a scientist), and I found it’s not the food I eat that causes these bouts of constipation. The only item I’ve found that might cause the bouts is coffee every day. An occasional coffee seems fine. What has helped me stay regular in a big way is Benefiber (or any pure wheat dextrose generic) three times per day. Lots of fluid.

My gastro doc was upset with the surgeon and said I’d regret not having the surgery. He fears I will end up in an emergency situation. I have searched the Mayo site and don’t find anything about redundant/ tortured colon. Are any Mayo docs doing research or treat this condition? Anyone else suffer from this too?
Thank you! -Jayne

@maykatcooper - I have hade the same experience, flunking colonoscopy prep. It is so embarrassing. The first time, years ago, the doctor also got very angry. It happened in July again, had a 2 day prep later and apparently still not perfect.
However, the reason we are there is because we have a problem.

Yes! My surgeon was very put out with me. When he finally re-did it, he told me that I'd thrown his back out.

Exactly! @astaingegerdm, there is no excuse for a doctor to exhibit that kind of behavior towards a patient, even in the worst scenario, much less yours. How unprofessional can one be?? Good Lord! That person should be reported. Rant over!

And my same sentiments to your doctor that I shared with @astaingegerdm, above. We sick folks should not have to endure such immature, unprofessional behavior!

That is terrible! My dr actually made a point of telling me it was not my fault. He said the next time (Hopefully not anytime soon!), he would do a 2 or 3 day prep. Doesn’t that sound like a blast!

I was prescribed Linzess to help with motility. So far is working, two weeks. Short of a colectomy, it’s a life of laxatives, fiber, lots of water, stress management. No doctors have been helpful discussing the situation and my life revolves around the bathroom until almost lunch time.I’m 68 and in otherwise good health. This can be very life limiting and depressing if you are active like me. I may work with a colon hydro therapist to see if that can help keep things moving but you must use caution about replacing electrolytes. One day at a time. Good luck

I have had constipation all my life. Got diagnosed with tortuous/ redundant colon recently. The best thing that has worked for me besides 64+ oz. water daily , is Citracel several times a week, high bran cereal, lots of fruit, no red meat or pork, lots of veggies, exercise. Dr. prescribed Miralax , which helps short term, but causes me a lot of cramping! Plus it can make things too soft. It's different for everyone. It takes some trial and error. I will say I did not want to rely on stimulant laxatives that can be unpredictable and cramping, and can stop working after long tern use. The Citracel, along with diet, high in fiber, Chia seeds work too in a smoothie several times a week. best to you!

I’ve had chronic constipation for many years. I had a colonoscopy last November and my dr. Told me I have a tortuous colon. I had surgery in Jan. 2020 and my surgeon said “ my only advice is to do whatever it takes not to be constipated bc if I do I’d end up back in the hospital. I have tried MiraLAX, Senacot, gummy fibers, magnesium, Amitiza, and Linzess.

The ONLY thing that works is called-Lactulose. It’s a syrup and I’ve been taking it for 4 months and it’s a miracle! Best wishes!

Doesn't lactulose cause extreme gas pains?

Thank you very much. I just asked my internist to call it in. I am willing to try anything and everything.
