Gastroparesis or slow modility colon

Posted by teresabarton @teresabarton, May 19, 2023

I was diagnosed with gastroparesis with one doctor and he sent me to a bigger university for a pacemaker.
The next university said it was not gastroparesis. This doctor had me do a Sitz Marker Test and after 7 days, I still had 58 markers left in my upper colon. He diagnosed me with a slow modility colon.
For the past 9 months I have (and getting worse) severe abdomen bloating, cramps, pain, nausea, and now lower back pain. I have been on a gastroparesis diet for 6 months with no relief. I only eat frozen yogurt and cracker for lunch. I wait to eat a more bland diet when I get home from work, knowing the bloating and nausea will get worse.
I now can only wear dresses, no pants, due to the extreme bloating and then discomfort of anything tight around my abdomen. Now I have gained 5 pounds in the last week with the same diet I have been on for 9 months.
My doctor now has me on miralax and apple juice. (During the last 6 months I have been with him, I have developed constipation in the past 3 months. Something I have never had in my 60 years of age.) I can't drink apple juice or anything except water due to the fact it also makes me nauseas.
I have tried Reglan, which made me suicidal, and erythromycin, which did not help.
Anyone have these same symptoms or and suggestions of what to do next. The doctor said I may just have to live like this. I am a very upbeat, positive person, but I can't imagine there is not something wrong to start the symptoms just in the last 9 months. I will take any help! Thank you so much.

You mentioned Miralax which is a warning bell to me. My grandchild was prescribed Miralax at a very young age, and developed horrid emotional reactioins. She had long-lasting unreasonable episodes of screaming and crying and was completely inconsolable to all efforts. She was taken off miralax, and after some time began to even out and become more able to interact. Research showed that Miralax could cause these situations and lead to possible permanent brain damage.
Surely, you have been advised to drink gallons of water and to try fiber such as Metamucil. Also, a vitamin, B1 or thiamin(e) could do a lot if you are deficient. I try to always use liquid or chewable supplements as tablets and capsules tend to pass
whole right thru my bowels with no benefit.

i drink lots and lots of fluids. fiber is tricky with gastroparesis. since thing can sit in the gi tract for prolonged periods.

Morning, I took mag calm for a long time. What I have learned, is mag calm is a form of carbonate which when added to water changes it and it’s absorbs very quickly in our body. I took it daily for a long time but it never caused a bowel movement or any diarrhea. I need something to keep my bowels constantly moving even if it’s diarrhea and it has to be three days a week or I need to do a cleanse as if prepping for a colonoscopy. Mag07 is oxygen based used as a cleanse, I believe mag oxide works better for use if you suffer constipation. It’s mag oxide per cap is 1,035 and it has potassium which helps for dehydration. I’ve learned their are quite a few mag supplements and powders on the market.
I think you need to research which works best for your situation. What other tests have you had for Gastro problem besides emptying test. Joanne

I have same disease as you. I stopped my expensive prescription Med and use a mixture I was given by a Physical Therapist. 3/4 cup prune juice, 1 cup oat bran and 1 cup applesauce. Two tbsp before bed and a small amount of milk of magnesia saline. I now, after 3 years, have regular bowel movements.
I do stay on a diet and don’t eat for 3 hours before bed.

hello, i really need some feedback. i have been sick for about 7-8 months and although i had my gallbladder out four weeks ago i am still sick. presurgery two different surgeons said i had more going on than just my gallbladder. i am going to see a motility doctor here in NH but im scared he willbe like most doctors and not take me seriously. i lose about a pound every day. this morning i woke up in such pain. i can barely eat which explains the one pound loss a day. i did have a stomach emptying. several months ago. this nurse practioner ordered it. the same nurse practioner who said there was nothing wrong with my gallbladder. anyway i think the test is invalid. first i never knew you were suppose to have eggs and toast. all i had was half a tuna sandwich. i saw and they told me it was normal and i just didnt empty on hour two of a four hour test. this GI wanted to put me on a antidepressent. i said no. only good thing he did was refer me to a motility doctor. i woke up in pain this morning and i dont know what to do or think. please help me.

I have had post operative gastroparesis for about 7 years.. I am male, now 84 years old.. Mayo MN gave me a way to cope with the associated problems.. I drink a lot of Pedialyte, drink Kefir each morning.. I can even eat celery if taken in small bites not more than 1/2" in length.. leafy things are a big problem but the stem parts of Napa cabbage or Romain work well with no problem.. for me the rate of eating anything is for the most part what causes problems.. This morning I enjoyed oatmeal with blueberries, strawberries, and almond slices.. when gaining weight not an issue but is the ongoing wish.. I can eat calories with abandon.. Ken

Brenda is this related to my situation or Eileen. This is hard to belief, trust me it has been for me but since acdf 3 fusion surgery done June 2020 I NEVER pass anything formed. So, it’s diarrhea to move something or stop all meds. I have stopped many many times since 2020 and get to 15 days without going to the bathroom. I ended up in the hospital. Now, I won’t go more than 5 or 6. I bought an enema system used for coffee enemas but I don’t use the coffee. I put two to three cups distilled water in and hold as long as possible to hopefully soften anything there. My problem is my stool gets stuck in traverse colon so way at the beginning of the colon where it empties from small intestine. I have severe motility issues. It’s just very odd because it happened after very long surgery. It was 6 hours and it was done through the front of my neck. Import never that controls bowels is right there. I think anesthesia and possibly the nerve is the issue but no one can do anything except say remove entire colon. I’m not. Joanne

I do not have any blockage. Have Gastroparesis. I use mixture of oat bran, applesauce and prune juice. Yep tablespoons before bed and milk of magnesia saline also before bed. I don’t eat meat, dairy or raw veggies or raw fruit.
I eat chicken and fish but never fried.
I use plant butter and drink cup of coffee in the morning. I take over the counter IBGUARD Pill before I eat and take a probiotic, Culturelle.

I wonder if this would help with severe colon motility issues. I eat no dairy, sugar or grain. I also eat baked chicken and white fish from time to time. I don’t eat anything raw either. My stomach emptying test I passed so I empty fine to next stage. It’s my colon that won’t function. I also suffer malnutrition. I’m on many prescription vitamins, high dose probiotic and b12 injections. My diet is not great but I do try. I try mixing it up as much as possible. Fiber kills me. What is mag saline and can you send that recipe again. I think I might digest applesauce, not sure about prune juice and that other item in your recipe. It could also be fine because it’s not a lot at bedtime. I stop eating at 4 every day and have breakfast 8-9am. Yes, I drown in water daily. Thanks Joanne

Never go over 3 days without a bowel movement! At this point bacteria will be growing on your food that you have not passed. At day 3, use Magnesium Citrate and a fleet enema. This will usually save a trip to the ER.

Mag citrate causes me to vomit for hours. That’s why I asked what mag saline was. I’ve been doing this routine, alone with so many other routines and my colon never functions on its own. I’m tired of it. Tonight I’ll take Philips milk or mag or maybe mag citrate but I will vomit for hours. I think that’s why it takes massive amounts to work because I vomit so much. I could never do this again every third day. I’ve lost a tremendous amount of weight from trying to empty my colon so often. My pcp, Gastro and natural team say 5 because of vomiting. I suffer terrible drug allergies as well. Thanks joanne
I don’t use fleet because tube hurts to insert. I buy disposable tubing to my stainless steel enema bucket. You need to think about the fact that a formed stool has not passed out of my rectum since early June 2020. I get pelvic floor PT for this.
