Playing Hooky - taking a day or session off of nebulizing

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Feb 13, 2022

I’ve tended to be a “Dudley Do Right” about faithfully maintaining adherence to a twice daily schedule on the nebulizer using 7% saline solution on the strength of its reputation for its capability to kill or diminish the strength of MAC infections. This evening however I’m “hookin’ out”; living dangerously.
Hope I “get away with it” and don’t end up taking a worse “Thumpin’, Don

@thumperguy Don, I must be playing with fire because I only nebulize once a day and I sometimes take a day off every week. But I know with this disease things can change. So far I've had no progression in four years (over two CT scans) but I think my exercising six days a week has also helped my lungs. I think it's ok to play hooky every now and then. It gives us a little break. Nan

Nan, it’s great that you’re on top of things. No need to tinker with what’s working. What is your exercise routine? Don

Hi Don, I am really going out on a limb and have stopped the nebs and just do dry salt inhaler. I have cavitary MAC and it isn't getting better. The last time I had MAC I was not told about nebs. This time, I was told to nebs twice a day and low and behold the cavity showed up and got bigger. Anyway, I go to Mayo next week and will see what they have to say about surgery. I guess the burning question is, does the nebs really help? or does it not help when there is a big hole in my lung that festers the bugs? Only time will tell..... good luck to us all. Carolyn

@thumperguy My exercise routine is a mix of things to keep myself interested because I actually hate to exercise. But when my best friend, who is a doctor, told me the day I was diagnosed with this lung disease six years ago that I had to exercise everyday to keep my lungs in shape, I listened to her. I do six days a week. I take one day off for rest. But it's a combination of either an aerobics class at the gym which has cardio and weights for 45 minutes, or 30-40 minutes on the treadmill power walking (which is about 2 miles or more) or just doing a power walk outside for 30-40 minutes probably two or three days out of the week. They say walking is just as good as anything else but I think a brisker walk is even better. I have a Fitbit watch so that helps keep me in check. And what's funny is, if I hadn't gotten this lung disease I wouldn't be doing this. It was a "sort of" blessing in disguise. Nan

Nan, you said,” I think a brisker walk is even better. “ In any given moment you’re right. However , for many years my wife and I were “Mall Walkers.” During that time I “hatched” an aphorism which I think has some truth; “Consistency Trumps Intensity!

addendum - Went to pulmonary doc at Mayo for breathing tests and CT scan. My lung function has improved and the cavity has collapsed. It is gone! Woo Hoo! No surgery! Thanks for listening!

Twice daily 7% nebbing sessions have so successfully controlled fever accompanied flare ups that I’m ready to see if I can get away with one daily session.

Hello @thumperguy. I thought those following your original post on testing your nebulizing schedule may like to get your update from today so have moved your post back into that discussion.

I would certainly give it a try! As a matter of fact, I have taken the next step - every other day seems enough right now. Interestingly, on my no-neb days, I can still taste the salt in the mucus I cough up when I huff cough.
