Hi @sniperk12, just reading the letters it sounds like your grandfather may want you to know about his past, perhaps things that were significant in his life but that he wasn't able to talk about.
You mention that he also seems like he's angry at someone and not wanting to be social. Is this out of character for him? Is he usually kind and likes to be with people? Has he recently been diagnosed with an illness that is making him worried or to think about leaving his family?
I agree with Colleen Young. Many in Vietnam have witnessed such atrocities that talking about them has been impossible. I think your grandfather may be getting this out now to leave behind a legacy amd to share parts of his life that only a very few will ever know about or appreciate - and possibly to help him deal with some of his pain from the past.. Has he been diagnosed with PTSD/ or sleep problems due to his military experience? My husband served as well (not Vietnam) but his PTSD has been difficult for all of us and now he has a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsons. His memory from 30, 40, 50 years ago is good, his recent memory is very poor. I just keep remembering that he can't help his condition and it is my job to be loving, helpful and patient (patience is the most difficult at times). Your grandfather is very blessed to have family that loves him and is willing to try to get answers. Have you been to a VA Clinic? They have many experts that can help your loved one in many ways. For us, it was the VA that performed many tests and then mentioned Mayo Clinic to us. That recommendation has been a gift and we are holding on with a more predictable and understandable diagnosis and medications tailored for his needs.
I loved reading your grandfather's accounts of his military experience - thank you for sharing. He is so lucky to have the support of his loved ones.
God Bless,
Jan
