Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

Dumb question from me. Do you think fibromyalgia makes muscles cramps and spasms. The get them at night but not all the time. I couldn't handle gabapentin and ropinirole so I just try to ignore them. I have left side weakness from infant polio.and attribute spasms to muscle fatigue. Emg test didn't show any life threatening condition.

@tarmansbks - not at all! Here is all kinds of info on fibromyalgia on the Mayo Clinic website:

I was diagnosed with PMR last September. I was put on prednisone, which is the usual treatment. I've had osteopenia (at one time diagnosed as osteoporosis, so I guess I've actually improved) for years. I've taken Evista, Actonel, and Fosamax over many (too many) years. The doctors were careless and allowed me to continue too long. I took myself off the medication. Now that I'm on prednisone, both my primary doctor and my rheumatologist are pushing me to go on Prolia. THey both say I'm at high risk for a fracture. The preceding conversation here does NOTHING to encourage me to go on it. I would probably never get off of it, as I've already been on so many medications over the years. I'm worried about getting an injection that lasts 6 months, and what if I have side affects? I'm having enough issues dealing with the PMR. I have an appointment with a different rheumatologist but not until April. I want to hear what she thinks. Any other ideas from those of you who have gone before??

Hi,
Don't go on Prolia. I told my endocrinologist I was stopping and he helped me by analyzing my risks of doing so. Although my numbers indicated high risk of a broken bones, he told me that over the next 10 years I have a 10% chance of a broken hip and a 25% chance of any broken bone. I will take that risk to be pain free, feel great and am able to live a normal life.

But if you fracture, say, a spinal vertebra, you will not be pain free or live a normal life. Just a warning from someone who took the risk of no meds and regrets it!

Hi All. I have been on Prolia for almost 2 years and have severe osteoporosis. I fell and fractured my left hip in April of 2016 and recovered from that. Last August I started experiencing intermittent pain in my left femur which has gotten progressively worse. I am now taking Gabapentin and am going to see a pain specialist. Has anyone else experienced severe pain like this from prolia? I have scoliosis and spinal stenosis and the pain in my lower back has gotten a lot worse since being on prolia.

I fractured my left hip 4 months ago and I am healing well. My doctors want me to go on reclast and I am very conflicted. I have had osteoporosis due to early menopause since my late forties. I took forteo for 2 years in my fifties and that did help. I also have IBS, therefore reclast. I meet with an endocrinologist on Monday and I am sure she will say I should do reclast. I will ask her about prolia. I had no side effects with forteo.

I can onky get a DEXA every 2 years. The first 3 showed an increase. The last one showed a decrease. I will 0probably have another one later this year.

I don't know if I will continue with Prolia. I have a molar that needs pulling and the oral surgeon will not touch it until 6 months has passed with my last injection. That will be April 7th. My hair is falling out a lot more than before Prolia. I have only had 2 injections, so I am not going to worry if I stop.

Don't forget to report back to us after your meeting with the endocrinologist. I am facing a similar situation and meet with my clinician on Wednesday.

OK. One of the things to be aware of is that reclast kills the bone growing cells and puts in a different kind of bone that can be more brittle.
