Ear Tinnitus and Pain with Neuropathy

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Jan 29, 2019

Does anyone have severe tinnitus and ear pain with their neuropathy? I have small fiber and autonomic neuropathy and I have been getting severe tinnitus (roaring and high pitch noise) and a feeling of pressure and pain for the last month. I am wondering if the neuropathy and/or medications are causing it. I am on gabopentin, cymbalta, and NSAIDS.

Tried to edit but it was too late, so here is my revised Reply. Thanks for the reply, it feels good to be able to vent out without feeling guilty and/or judged. It's been awhile since I've tried any drugs, therefore difficult remembering everything I've tried. The one's I can remember are Doxepin, Gabapentin, Amitriptyline, and I believe Nortriptyline. In short, at the time, I didn't receive any relief whatsoever and actually I wouldn't have known I took anything other than the horrible side effects I experienced, like; Drowsiness, Dizziness, Headache, Blurred-Vision, Dry Mouth , and a consistent Upset stomach. In short, I still had ALL the Neuropathy symptoms but unfortunately with the additional side effects added to my plate. Because, I still try to ride or walk several times a week and when I was on meds I couldn't do any type of exercise from the side effects, especially being sick to my stomach. As I said earlier, I've pretty much lost hope for any relief. For one, because it seems medical scientist out there, don't seem to have many incentives to find any answers. Especially over the last few years, the entire world is focused only on COVID, leaving everyone else to shovel-into the scrap heap of bodies without much empathy towards any long-term outcomes. In northern Michigan where I live, the Hospitals over the past 18 months have been pretty much shutdown for normal activity, and running almost exclusively for treating COVID and seems almost forced into other life emergencies like deliveries, myocardial infarctions and strokes. The bottom line, the medical world is operating with "unorganized chaos" ! And you are definitely right, for any hope we must be our own physicians... That I have .... without any success.

@usadavidh I hear you. I feel really lucky to have the neurologist I have. He is willing to listen and try new/different things. I also have bad side effects with the medications I’ve tried. I’ve been through cymbalta, gabapentin and now Amitriptyline. So far they haven’t helped my neuropathy symptoms but as I mentioned, they help with coping/depression. So as I try new meds for the neuropathy, I’ve learned I also need something that will help me through it all mentally. I’m 44 years old and had been looking for answers for about 20 years before I found my neurologist who suspected neuropathy and did a biopsy to diagnose me, finally. I’ve always been a very happy person, never suffered from depression but that all changed about 5-6 years ago and that’s when I got more assertive about finding answers. All of my symptoms have progressed over the years. Doctors had me convinced I was just going through early menopause. Obviously that was not the case! Having answers and support systems (like this forum) really help us as we move forward and act as our own health advocates. I’m glad you came here to “vent”, it really does help to connect with others who truly know at least a little about what we’re going through.

My wife suffers greatly from idiopathic small fiber neuropathy as well as tinnitus. She takes gabapentin and some sleep medicine(Ambien), but most medications, even at micro doses causes horrible tinnitus(ringing, almost siren levels, in her ears). She is now extremely hesitant to take anything.
On top of this, she has a jaw tremor(her neurologist considers this hyper-excitability due to the ISFN), which is causing horrible jaw pain, which she can not take any medication for, due to the tinnitus.
She feels like she is the only one going through this. Any one else have anything remotely like this? And any suggestions?
Thank you. I am glad you are all here to run this by.

Did this start after Covid or the vaccine? Does she still have tremors? only her jaw? I hope she'b better!! I've had this for a year and still trying to find something to help.

Ibuprofen is a non steroidal anti inflammatory NSA. Unfortunately they can cause serious tinnitus. I have had to discontinue their use because it made my tinnitus worse. The same goes for aspirin. Tylenol is preferred for me at any rate. Not as strong as ibuprofen though. Tylenol 1 or 2 contains codine, another no-no for us poor folks with the never ending noise of tinnitus. Amitripyline has also been flagged as a possible culprit but I find it’s ok for me. Have you tried cannabis for your headaches? You can get a prescription from your doctor for it that doesn’t include the recreational drug effect.

I have severe neuropathy in feet, ankles and now legs. I also have had tinnitus very loudly for 2 years since the virus. Nothing seems to help.

That "sounds" like me! But I never made a connection of tinnitus, neuropathy, and hearing loss together.. Looks like I'd better begin following this now..
I don't have a hearing aid yet, but do plan on getting that done soon.. We'll be moving across the country soon so I'll start that process after the move.

I am not a medical professional. I think a lot depends on the individual. Some people get tinnitus with noise levels or medications that won’t affect another person. My husband has been taking baby aspirin for years but does not have tinnitus. Don’t stop without talking to your Dr. Especially if you have cardiac problems.
