Persistent pain in top left side of back below the shoulder

Posted by pacarolyn @pacarolyn, Jan 24, 2022

I was diagnosed with PMR about a year ago. Initially, I had a lot of pain but it has improved to were I generally feel better. Has anyone else experienced left side only burning pain in the upper back when lying on that side, or sitting up from PMR?

@pacarolyn, My PMR is currently in remission but during the 2 times that it was active I don't believe I experienced left side only burning pain in the upper back. I did have instances when laying on my side where my shoulder, arms and hands would go numb which I think is related to compressing the ulnar nerve or other nerves. I still have those symptoms if I sleep on my side too long or in a specific way. Hopefully some other members can share their experience with you also.

Have you discussed the symptoms with your primary care doctor or rheumatologist?

I’ve had upper back pain on both sides. Actually the back pain was the most excruciating part when lying in bed at night and trying to get up in the morning. I was wondering if others had the upper back pain also as we mostly just hear about the arms shoulders and hips.

@abbeyc so sorry to hear that you have that pain. It’s almost the only place I haven’t felt pain!

Yes. Right down through the thoracic muscles. Could not bend my arms backwards and down toward the back of the hips. Still a little stiff in that area at the back of my upper arms. Could barely get out of bed, could barely dress (but persevered) although it took a l-o-n-g time to do so. Then the hips and back of thighs started and after 3.2 weeks on Prednisone that has all gone. Thanks the gods.

Since beginning Prednisone 3 weeks ago, my eyes began getting really irritated. Got referred to an ophthamologist. My vision has improved to where my prescription which was new in October, 2021, is too strong and that is why my eyes get irritated when reading. Flip side...it makes cataracts develop faster but that is something for another time. Right now hot flashes and sweats which I did not have throughout menopause. All the pain is gone and that is a small concession to have my old self back. 🙂

I have had upper back, and shoulder pain, along with neck, hips and sides. It gets so bad sometimes, that I cannot lay down in my bed, and end up sleeping in my recliner.

yes. Very similar symptoms and immobility experience for me. Glad it sounds like it’s better for you now.
How many meds of prednisone were you first put on?

I am currently down to 5 mg of Prednisone, and 60 mg of Cymbalta, and I am feeling it. I do not think the Cymbalta has worked well for me.
I go to Duke in March.

Only been on it for 3 weeks and a day. 20mg per day. It's a game changer for sure. Feel better soon. ~ Deb
