Looking for a new PCP in Arizona

Posted by ildiheil @ildiheil, Jan 21, 2022

My husband and I tried to find a PCP and was told no physicians available to accept new patients. We recently moved from Ohio and have been in the Cleveland Clinic network. I was very dissappointed that a world class hospital system does not have physicians to take care of the public here in Arizona.
Is this how Mayo takes care of their patients and public health? Absolutely upsetting!

@ildiheil, I’m sorry to hear that you were unable to get an appointment with Primary Care at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Mayo Clinic AZ does offer primary care (https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/primary-care-arizona/sections/overview/ovc-20457292). Unfortunately at this time there are more requests for appointments than available openings.

Are you looking for a PCP in Phoenix, Scotsdale or elsewhere?

REPLY

Yes we are open to any location however the Mayo representative told us there are no available PCPs anywhere. Is this true?

Hi, welcome to Arizona, I'm from Arizona and get my specialized treatment for my Heart Transplant at Mayo Clinic but ive never seen Mayo as a health care system . They are more like specialists than primary care. I am aware of some offices that have PCPs but very limited to the Phoenix area. As for regular type care I have a regular physician that handles normal needs. I don't see Mayo as a healthcare system like we have a few here in Arizona and the ones I've used in the past like Diginity Health is my favorite and probably the biggest is Banner Health. But I don't see Mayo that way. Most insurances don't even have them as primary care. I see Mayo strength as the go to place when you are out of options. The few offices that associate themselves with Mayo are not tied directly to the Clinic in Phoenix and Scottsdale. For most of us in Arizona we live to far from Mayo to even use them for Primary Care. I think it's because of the way Mayo operates I got referred there due to needing a transplant but most of my cardiac care was thru great doctors all over the state. My I inquire as to what medical area your dealing with? Maybe I may be able to help direct you to someone that can help. Are you moving to the Phoenix Area or someplace else.
Blessings

ildiheil @ildiheil ,

Unfortunately it is a issue of supply and demand. As population ages and more people retire to warmer states, the demand for medical providers increase.

I attached PDF report: "Tackling Arizona’s Primary Care Physician (PCP) Shortage" , from Univ Az on shortage. It is from 2019, but doubt much has changed,

I was born at a Mayo hospital over 65 years ago and one of reason I stay in bitter cold MN is health care. Even though I have a PCP at Mayo Rochester, I still have problems getting an appointment with specialist at Mayo. I compete with appointment availability with patients from all over the world.

Hello Dana. Thank you so much for the explanation. It really helped and now I understand. We are in the Phoenix area. My husband is a retired letter carrier. His body is shot from carrying mail for 27 years. Knee replacement, full ankle replacement but after recovery he still worked until he was able to retire early. His body is shot as he is having muscular and skeletal issues. Due to his stroke 10 years ago and several silent heart attacks he is on lots of medication which limits him on what treatments/medication he can take to be pain free. He is only 62 years old. Since our 2 younger children moved here 6 years ago, we experienced that the climate is better here for his body. Even his drs at the Cleveland Clinic agreed. The final push to move here was the birth of our 1st grandchild. We have been here since November and looking to establish a new PCP/Internal Medicine to manage his meds and medical needs. I am not a fan of Banner Health since I have been told by several people to stay away. However, I am considering Dignity and Honor Health.
We were very fortunate to have 4 great healthcare systems to choose from in Cleveland. We stayed within the Cleveland Clinic network for 20 years.
We are looking to establish the same or similar quality health care here in Arizona. I welcome any other suggestions you may have and thank you for helping to explain how Mayo works.

Than you for the information. It really helped. We were blessed to have 4 great health care systems to choose from in Ohio. We chose to stay with the Cleveland Clinic and loved the quality care we recieved. We are hoping to find the quality of care here in Arizona.

Your more than welcome and I've heard the same thing about Banner. Most of my doctor's are able to practice at both and there are other smaller agencies.
My preferred for most of my issues prior to the transplant was thru Diginity as my Cardiologist perfers them also. But I've also had great healthcare, if it's Heart related, thru Biltmore Cardiology which uses Abrazo Hospital in Phoenix as it's main Hospital. But them I only recommend certain doctors as I've had good and bad with some who use Abrazo so if your looking for a good EP Cardiologist let me know the one i had prior to Mayo was awesome.

So basically find a Doctor you like as many of them use multiple Hospitals. My favorite Hospital besides Mayo and if a Doctor uses them is Chandler Regional Which was the main Hospital I used prior to Mayo. I'll be available to help if I can. I live south of Phoenix in a small town called Florence so most of my non transplant care is in the Casa Grande area except for Biltmore Cardiology. I'm not real familiar with the different Doctors in the Phoenix area. Have a great day
